Hello! It's your wonderful BEST OF 2015 writer here, fresh off the realization that I'll never write anything as good as Vaynespotting for the rest of my life.
But instead of killing myself, I've read a couple posts on this subreddit about what some good lane matchups are, and when to play what support. They had some really good lane combos, like Kog/Janna, and some great advice, like countering all-in supports with Janna. I've decided to expand on those ideas a bit with some helpful analysis of my own.
Notable Lane Combos
Draven/Janna: aka, Primetime Lane when the Janna player is using a good skin and the Draven player a really mediocre one. Basically, the Draven player should be a mechanical god with the decision-making ability of an old lightswitch. He does a lot of damage, and then the Janna helpfully presses the E button, does a little light reading of Jean Paul-Sartre's novel "Nausea," and maybe disengages a gank or whatever.
Ashe/Janna: this lane is predicated on the realization that Ashe is still enabled in the game, rather than just being a tutorial champion. She slows people who are running away from her, and Janna slows people running toward her. Easy!
Twitch/Janna: it turns out that you can see the animation of Janna casting shield on an invisible Twitch, so it kind of gives away the gank. This is helpful for opponents to think about when they die to Twitch dealing several thousand damage.
Kog'Maw/Janna: this combo revolves around the interaction between Kog'Maw being broken as ****, and Janna being an enabled champion in League of Legends (a Riot Game).
How to Counter Certain Supports
Vs hard engage, play: Janna. This has already been discussed, but it turns out that champions cannot effectively enter ability commands while crowd controlled. It's an interaction that Master Yi players will learn someday.
Vs mage supports, play: Janna. They will push you under your tower, and then your "jungler" will kill them. If that fails, you will enter the midgame, when you are playing Janna and they are playing a Morgana who rushed hourglass or whatever, who cares, literally just press Q, it's fine.
Vs junglers, midlaners, and toplaners, play: Janna. Now I know what you're saying: those aren't bot lane roles! Well you clearly haven't played solo queue, because those piece of **** Pantheons and Udyrs and Twisted Fates are constantly in my **** about whose lane it is. It turns out that actually, this is Janna's lane. Have a pleasant discussion with the enemy Udyr about whether post-industrial society has irreversibly degraded into an unliveable wasteland, where capitalism alienates good, noble junglers from their work and they can't do a ****ing thing because in order to engage on the enemy team as Udyr or Trundle or Nasus or whatever the **** their gapcloser is Walk Very Fast and it turns out that Janna is very good against that. So much philosophical and artistic discourse from the pre-war eras can be tossed out in its entirety with the evidence of the downfall of the humanity of society (w/r/t mass murder, warfare, starvation, genocide, Mordekaiser's rework), but remind Udyr that suicide is not an acceptable answer to confronting an absurd society; rather, it is only the acceptance of the ridiculousness of ever engaging on a team with Janna that must occur before true gains in LP.
Vs the creeping depression ruining your life, play: Janna. When you realize that you are not fully in control of anything in your everyday working or personal life, you can accept that the idea of "carrying" a team-based game is a futile pursuit. Instead, relax and allow the bubble-bath-like experience of gradually affecting a team to wash over you. Your shield is not an ability in a game; it is a representation of the invisible hand of forces far more powerful than yourself affecting unseen change on the lives of everyone, whether they think they have come in contact with it or not. If your team loses, know that nothing could be done, really, that's simply another day that passes without meaningful change.
I hope this guide has been informative. Ask me any questions you might have about confronting existential dilemmas with Janna.
