So here's my theory, they're setting up The Darkness giving The Dark One their power as a corporeal figure. Now it's cannon that a reflection of it teaches the new DO how to use and embrace their dark magic. I think that the journey of this season will culminate with Emma finally uniting Excalibur with The Dagger to use it as a weapon but from Rumple's monologue I think we got a giant hint that this will end up bringing the Darkness back to life as a corporeal figure.
So I think Emma is being manipulated for this aim, uniting the two will end up with her casting the darkness out of herself accidentally (so her journey for 5B is coming to terms with her willingly being seduced by darkness) and the big bad will turn out to be The Darkness itself.
Remember end of last season The Apprentice said that Merlin fought the darkness and ended up weakening it enough to trap it in the dagger. So it must have been alive and mobile on its own. Kind of like Buffy and The First Evil.
Also Emma didn't sent them back and cast the new curse, Merlin did. Emma also doesn't remember anything and she's just supposing they failed her. Her darkness is making her angry at them for failing her even though she doesn't know how they did so.

I thought Rumple/her mind said that she brought back the sword so I think she cast the curse?
Emma walking around in her sensible little black dress and sprayed white hair is just so stupid and wrong. Couldn't they have figure out a way to make the hair look a little fiercer?
Yes, they could have done so much better with Emma's look. It just seems so basic. Also I died that now Emma is evil, they have given her a house. She has been long overdue for a home.
I try to stay rather nuetral when it comes to couples on this show but Robin/Regina were adorable during the dance. I'm just tired of him getting kidnapped. Is it necessary he is in danger every damn episode? Anyway thought it was cute they were making fun of Hook and Emma. Honestly though, I don't normally have a preference and open to anything.
Just watched it, it was a great episode, liked it way better than the premiere, loved Regina, she is such a different person from the pilot, but did love the comeback of her old dress
I agree they need to stop putting Robin in danger, I mean it was twice this episode alone Emma looked fine, I mean Rumple was completely normal in Storybrook, when he was the dark one. I have some strange feelings with Guinevere, don't really like her. And I'm really confused about the sword, did or didn't Emma bring back Excalibur and what is going to happen with it
I loved them using an other mythology in this episode with the underworld, maybe in upcoming seasons they can branch out some more into different 'fairytales', or did I miss something and is it common in those too. The promo for next week looks like it will focus on Excalibur and Emma and Hook as a couple, looks exciting
It has been the first since months that I'm really into a ONCE episode : good rhythm, action, magic, emotion... Hope this will be like this for the entire season.
Now about the original Dark One... I'd love to see Madam Mime
Omg if its really morgana trapped in the dagger i really really hope they cast eva green to play that role omg wkefjwnbeiubwifub her scene in 300 was owenoweif SLAY
But this whole sword story is confusing... can someone explain why it's such a big deal? and what would happen if Emma took the sword out (besides paying the price)
And @dondiva how can someone be inside the dagger? I don't remember them mentioning that... they only keep mentioning that it controls the dark one

Have you never read about Excalibur? Sword & the Stone? Camelot?
They've never mentioned someone being inside the dagger. Merlin is trapped inside a tree, and it was just a theory since the dagger was created in the same place.

Yeah, they've never mentioned it. I think I've read a theory somewhere that Merlin fought the darkness but was only able to weaken it and trap it inside a broker shard of Excalibur.
The nature of the darkness seems to be rooted in Arthurian legend. In most depiction Morgana La Fey is cast as the titular villain of Arthur’s reign yet in OUAT she is no where to be found. The most obvious conclusion is that Morgan is the darkness herself. Fearing for the safety of all worlds Merlin destroyed Morgan and bound her magic to a broken shard of Excalibur and tied her to a mortal soul.
Morgan was often seen as deeply connected with other worlds, most prominently the fairy court where she derived many ancient and evil magicks.
Another possibility is that Morgan herself was the first dark one.
