Disney's Maleficent cast a powerful spell on the U.K. and Irish box office, where it opened to a stellar $2.5 million on Wednesday.
That's ahead of the first-day earnings of fellow Disney release Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and marks the biggest opening day ever for Angelina Jolie in those markets, as well as in Italy and the Philippines.
Even more promising, Maleficent did more than double the business of Oz the Great and Powerful in the U.K. and Ireland.
A passion project for Jolie, Maleficent is expected to benefit mightily from being the summer's first tentpole for females of all ages, tapping into the same audience that turned Disney's Frozen into a global Goliath.
In the film, Jolie stars as the infamous sorceress from Sleeping Beauty. Elle Fanning also stars.
The film opened Wednesday in Italy and the Philippines where it became the biggest opening day in Jolie’s career in those territories. However, Disney did not provide box office grosses for those countries, making the extent of that accomplishment difficult to quantify.
