I'm having such a kii at reading straight guys review Mariah albums
Butterfly:
"
Lock up your boyfriends and husbands ladies... Mariah's free as a butterly!!!
Good-bye Mr. Mottola, Hello Ghetto Mama!
Best tracks: My All, Whenever You Call, The Roof, Close My Eyes, Breakdown. 4/5"
"As a kid and then a teenager during the 90's who loved alternative and grunge, I detested Mariah Carey. In fact, it wasn't until 2010, over a decade later, that I gave her a chance. Now I live in a world where Ke$ha (that's right, I inserted the "$") and The Black Eyed Peas rule the airwaves with autotune and cheap gimmicks. Mariah Carey's got to be a goddess in comparison, right?
Well, yeah, kinda. Not only could Mariah sing, unlike most of today's pop starlets, she had some good songs. Yes, she made a career off of cheesy ballads like "Butterfly" and "My All," but I'm old enough to admit they're irresistible in their own way. The woman had over 20 hits for a reason.
"Honey," a song that even as a kid I could appreciate because of the music video (Mariah Carey in a swimsuit in her prime) is a pop delight despite Puff Daddy's brief appearance. "The Roof," which builds off of Mobb Deep's "Shook Ones Part II," is the single everyone should have heard. "Breakdown" features Bone Thugz (if only kids these days remembered eccentric Bone Thugz!) and Mariah does her best to lay it down with their craziness.
Yeah, there's a few filler songs ("Babydoll") but this isn't "Thriller" anyhow. But it does remind me that Mariah is pop royalty, and that after all these years, we should forgive and forget "Glitter."
Maybe. 3.5/5"
"She's more popular than the Beatles who were more popular than Jesus. Mariah is more popular than Jesus which puts her right up there with water-skiing, the NFL, and yard work. Perhaps the highest paid prostitute of the 20th or 21st century. 0.5/5"
Daydream:
"Was still good in her pre-**** years : ) 4/5"
"Apparently Daydream is her best... but it sounds so generic who cares? I don't want to listen to anymore once the first track is finished. 2.5/5"
"One star for "Fantasy", which is a five-star single. Rest of the album is worthless. 1/5"
"Yes Im straight. But this would be in my top 5 albums if i ever got stranded on a deserted island. There is not one bad track here. 5/5"
"Scooped this up in a budget twin-pack with “Butterfly”. Mariah won’t engage your brain, but she may engage your heart, as this is just one long stream of lovey-dovey girly sex/romance fantasies. After the bubbly “Fantasy”, which is the sugariest thing in my entire collection, we’re in for a flow of well-crafted smooth ballads, more innocent compared to “Butterfly” which saw her evolving towards slinkier grooves. “Long Ago” gives a strong indication of where she was heading.
I'd like it even more if they'd thrown in wandering flute, oboe and mellotron melodies all through the album.. oh well. She really does write touching, effective romantic lyrics. The last track lays her heart bare with a confession of her insecurities. Yes, I file her with my mainstream Christian and ambient/new age CDs, not my rock CDs.. but after having had this a couple of years.. i really do like to listen to Mariah occassionally. Simple, but sweet. 3/5"
Daydream got a 3.2/5 from 422 ratings whilst Butterfly got 2.95/5 with 429 ratings
