"Glad You Came" |
WRITE-UP:
Another unexpected entry on my top 20 goes to The Wanted for their breakout hit for 2012 with Glad You Came. This song was released way back in the middle part of 2011 but it only got recognized on the early part of 2012 just like What Makes You Beautiful. In fact both songs by these boy bands attained its success on the same period. This eventually led to a boy band rivalry between the two. If I will choose between the two singles alone, I will choose Glad You Came. I've been hearing this a couple of times before and I was hoping that at least this will become a big hit. That expectation came true and Glad You Came paved the way for The Wanted to earn their biggest hit to date particularly in the US. Glad You Came has this flavor that I simply could not resist. The boys, particularly Max and Nathan delivered the lines well. This is a perfect summer song I must say; the music video even added life to the summer ambiance of this track. I see that this also chart so high in the year-ender of Billboard Hot 100 making it one of the songs that define the year 2012. The Wanted proves that they are not a mere boy band. Their latest record Third Strike will probably continue their success in the music scene for a bit longer.

2010: ALICIA KEYS "Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart"
2011: ADELE "Someone Like You"

11 | ELLIE GOULDING
"Lights" |
WRITE-UP:
Just one position shy from the prestigious Top 10 is Ellie Goulding with the sleeper hit for Lights. I see that majority of you here felt the same way with the success of this track. This song was released way back in 2010 but only got noticed last year. This is actually one of the slow-climbing songs of all time. At first listen, I really did not care about this song. The music video didn't really help at all in making me appreciate it and I was really on a decision in placing this as one of the worst songs released for the year. I gave this song a try way back in March where it stayed in my countdown for five weeks. The radio somehow helps me to like it for a little bit. What gave me the interest to see its beauty is when this song is climbing like a turtle on the Billboard Hot 100. When Lights was eventually on #11 and posing a threat in entering the top 10 the following week, that was the moment when I totally appreciated this song. Lights eventually peaked at #2 just behind Call Me Maybe and Whistle and this made me realize that it will be one of the songs that will define 2012. Ellie Goulding has this unique sound that I haven't heard yet that's makes this song so hypnotizing to appreciate. I let this song enter my countdown once again way back in August and it eventually became one of the longest staying songs for the year. That is good enough for this to chart this high in my Best Of 2012 list.
