Yeah, starting with the main divas is probably a good place to start, as you're bound to like some of them.
For groups someone recommended Perfume. m-flo's my favorite group. They're more urban(still pretty pop) but they've worked with a lot of artists, and many of the major female J-Pop artists(Namie Amuro, Koda Kumi, Crystal Kay) and K-Pop artists like BoA and 2NE1. And their music is amazing.
For male artists I don't really use any but Daichi Miura, Yuya Matsushita and Shota Shimizu are really the only young and important ones.
Avoid AKB-48 like the plague though.
Stop procrastinating and start the damn thing already
