There's a lot of different types of alternative music. Alternative pop and alternative rock are not the same thing. Alternative pop can be meant for top 40, or it can be clearly not meant for top 40 Instrument and production style matters a lot in pop music, as does having more uptempo and happier tracks, both of which Ultraviolence lacks.
I'm not "excusing" anything. I'm not saying Lana should have hits if x, y, or z. She made music that isn't going to succeed on radio, except alternative radio. That's not an excuse, it's a fact.
