iamamiwhoami, what is this?
iamamiwhoami has been one of my favorite acts of the internet era for years. Their music has always been the most fantastic mix of organic and electronic, and the visuals they produce have been unique and incredible as well. Unfortunately, I'm starting to feel that the returns are diminishing on this project, and I'm sad to say BLUE feels like a major musical mis-step for the group.
Gone are the songs that make iamamwhoami great, like "n" and "play", that gleefully mash up cold electronic production with unusual rhythms, shifts in time signature, creative structures, hints of other genres. Every track on BLUE plays as a fairly straightforward synthpop effort over some variation of a 4-to-the-floor or halftime beat, and seems to move through the same conventional pop structure. The production is gorgeous as ever, but nothing new feels brought to the table. Jonna's vocals are also beautiful, but she also feels like she's on autopilot to some degree. Chasing Kites stood out as the best track to me, but as an album I just can't recommend Blue.
