I like it too, but as a title track, it's a bit underwhelming.

I don't think SNSD were ever releasing "the best music in pop". They've released some great songs, sure, but I don't think they were that consistent in the quality of their music.

Mr.Mr. is such a gem, I really hope more people eventually succumb to its subtle features that make it great.
The 90s influences
The 90s hey! shouts
The corny neo neo neo and world world world repetitions
The blending of old synthetic music and newer, sharper synths
The massive build-up at the end with the double-whammy key change
It's all about the subtleties with Mr.Mr.
|
I never picked up anything 90's about Mr Mr
The shouts aren't 90's, and even if they are, why does that alone make the song better? It's not enough to say, "Oh this is influenced by the 90's, it's amazing". You gotta take that influence and do something with it. Like Little Mix do, or even 2NE1 did with Baby I Miss You
The truth of the matter is, this is a grade C production. Which shouldn't be a shock when you see that the producers mainly produced for Ciara's shelved One Woman Army project and Alesha Dixon. What are SM thinking?

Yeah Mr. Mr is way more late 70's, 80's, especially with that fashion disco/R&B chorus.
Otherwise it's middling at best.

I know the shouts aren't exclusively 90s, but they sound a lot like kid shouts you would have heard ~20+ years ago, so that's what I mean (maybe it would be more 80s?). Similar to the ones in Girls' Generation and Into the New World.
But why do you have to do something with it? Why can't subtle similarities be enough? This seems to be the general problem with netizens nowadays, they expect so much to be right there in front of them that when it's not it's 'bad'. There are so many artists out there that build music on subtle features and are acclaimed for it, like Bjork and The Weeknd (obviously I'm not directing comparing here).
You're all so quick to say it's an appalling song but I've yet to see why you all think so. It's starting to look purely because it doesn't live up to your expectations.

Just listen closely to the chorus, it's not because of the Yeah or Hey

I don't care how much people in here pretend they have some ridiculously high standard when it comes to songs, Mr.Mr is a good song.
The music video is a mess, the song did not deserve it.

The First Japanese Album remains the best pop album released in 2010-2012 despite releases from Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Rihanna x3 (MESS), Beyonce, Kesha, Katy Perry etc

Basically, and its gets old. This mess was obviously out of the girls' hands and this messy isn't going to make me stan for them any less. Mr.Mr. is a good title track.
If it was a Nugu group with the same song, they would all be creaming their pants.

Those kind of "hey" parts were more so in 00's pop I think. Definitely when everyone was "urban", like early Pink and Xtina.
But why do you have to do something with it?
Because what's the point of having something there for the sake of it without explanation? Would it be OK for SM to throw in another member for one MV without explanation, "just because"? Are they only using the 90's now, because it's in trend? If so, that's boring and explains why the song is as flat as it is. But I'd like to give SM a little more credit than that... especially since it ain't really 90's
Gurl, I'm really not. I like GG and I've had 5 days with this song. And damn right it didn't live up to my expectations. 14 months since they've released a Korean single and we get Ciara's leftovers? Not even from her good album, but the one deemed too bad for CIARA? Gurl bai. I will rightly fume.

Oh yeah, I agree that the First Japanese Album is flawless. But that's not what your OP said!

Wait, you might be right with early 00's.
But the entire mini is 90s-based in terms of sound, so isn't that effectively "going there"? I don't see why the song being retro is a bad thing at all.
But even in general you all seem to have way too high expectations with Soshi. I mean, you all praise their 1st Japanese album to the moon and back but you make it seem like they achieved all of that in one album, forgetting that half of it is 3 years of singles, proving that they've only ever had a decent song or two per album.
Hang on though, is Mr.Mr. really a Ciara leftover?

My comment wasn't so much the album but the era beginning in mid 2010 - mid 2011 to when the album was released.
I feel bad for the good sis Paparazzi and FLOWER POWER always being forgotten because they were thrown onto Girls&Peace but they were high quality, accessible without being too generic or unimaginative etc

The Underdogs (Mr Mr's producers) produced three songs for Ciara's canned album One Woman Army. One of which being the first single Sweat. It's release to iTunes was cancelled ONE DAY after it being serviced to radio and it only charted on the Bubbling Under R&B chart. So that's why I'm bringing out Ciara like a bad example. I don't get why SM would be so quick to work with these guys, as if they actually had the best song for the girls??? They've done some great stuff (Halo, Take You Down) but if that's the demo SM got, they shoulda kept it moving imo. Let's not act like SM can't be choosy who works with these girls... Yeah they've previously worked with Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, and Chris Brown, but I don't see any of them touching this with a 10ft pole. And since GG are basically on their level (well the first two) in Asia, why are they getting these songs? Because we should be impressed they're working with Americans?
No
To clarify, they didn't touch her actual released album CIARA, which totally is >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Honestly I can't even remember what the mini sounds like to argue against that, but if you say so! Going retro isn't bad, I just don't like it done to seek trends without purpose. It reeks of "quick lil singles". Like an artist who never done EDM, but now EDM is popular and their new album is 100% EDM. It's basic
Even taking out the Japanese versions of Hoot, etc, it's more solid than most of their releases. And I praise some of the other output too. Flower Power, Gossip Girls, IGAB (at times), The Boys... I don't wanna come across as a hater here, but I can't sit back and praise this release like it's worth something special. It's really basic. It's not GG. And I think time will prove that mostly.
Nah, I'm only kidding, but I wouldn't be shocked at the same time
