I almost feel like it's the opposite. I mean, Adele is a great singer and I like both of her albums, but I almost feel like because she's come along and is a little bit different than what's typically played, she's garnering universal acclaim as if her music were perfect, which is not at all the case.
On top of that, I do keep hearing about how she's so different from the mainstream. Yes, her soulful approach is different than the "typical," but I kind of also feel like it's important to realize that she isn't totally independent of the mainstream. Keep in mind that the writers and producers on this album have written for Cee Lo Green, Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson, the Dixie Chicks, Taio Cruz etc.
I mean I understand the praise. She is a very talented singer. But to hail her as something radically different from everything else in the mainstream and someone whose music is unassailable and completely independent of the typical pop scene is pretty misleading to me. To an extent, I do believe the praise she's received thus far is partially unwarranted. The critical scene, which has reviewed her positively, has been nowhere near as quick to bestow upon her the universal acclaim that the general public has lately.
