In addition to the lack of private flight, it's combined with the fact that she's flying into one of the largest and most hectic airports in the US, in most pap-filled city in the United States, after disappearing and being gone for years, the car wasn't right there, she gives them her attention and verbally allows them know how much it freaks her out, her son is never photographed, and most of all, she has him with her. I think some laws might be made/being made in California specifically, but it's still all about pictures of their kids to them because that's what makes them big money. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have describes many a time paps waiting outside when they leave their house to see if they bring their kids with them, because that's who they really want pictures of.
I mean, LAX is very much a hotspot airport to be harassed in general, and she likely would have zero problems if she flew into a random non-celeb city in (or heck, she even seemed to get away in the airport in NYC without notice), but if you look at other famous artists making the same walk without kids (and without all of those same characteristics as Adele in general), it somehow seems ages less awful and less almost violent:

Paps usually know when Rih, Katy, Tay and those other fame*****s come to LAX. With Adele, however, that's not the case.
It the UK, Adele can use Angelo as a shield because paps won't take photos when he's with her. She probably couldn't remember that in America there's no such thing -- yet.

But wouldn't you think that they'd get more paps then then she would? If it's seriously like "call ahead to get stalked", I would expect more to come than have tons magically show up. But who knows.
