This is so gonna ignite a huge debate if that happens.
And for a VH1 list, I'm surprised this is attracting huge response/speculations.

he is one of the longest running artists on the Billboard R&B Charts along with Beyonce and Alicia Keys, has the most #1 singles this past decade, has 9 #1 singles and one of the few artists to have #1 single in 3 different decades. Not to mention there were very few weeks where an Usher song wasn't topping the charts in 2004 a type of feat that no other artist has really accomplished. If that is not impact then I don't know what is. Look JT is my dude but he dissapeared from music and has gotten more into acting and because of that and the fact Usher had more success and longeitivity it would be understandable why Usher would make it before JT on this list. Just because Usher isn't one of the most talked artists on this site doesn't mean he wouldn't be on this VH1 list after all I'm sure they recognize the charts

But we all know why this topic was created: to kiss Beyonce's ass for the 2,000,000,000,000+ time on ATRL.

Nah, I don't think they would be bold enough to throw in GaGa with only an album and a half. They didn't even throw in artists who had major impact with five albums on their first list.

Seriously, the only contemporary R&B artists of today I see making it in is Beyonce and Mary J. Blige, who is being underrated in this race.

IMO, Whitney, Mariah, Janet and Cher will all make it. Other possibilities include old timers like Nina Simone and Billie Holiday--plus Diana Ross and Donna Summer. Not to mention some of the Lilith Fair singers (Sarah, Sheryl Crow, Fiona Apple?), and other '90s stars like Alanis.

Eli, go back to page 7 and read the original list - you see Mimi there? i love her like cooked food, but the day Mariah every gets respect from her peers and/or critics ...
From the original list, here's who I see POSSIBLY making it:
1. Aretha Franklin
2. Tina Turner
3. Janis Joplin
4. Bonnie Raitt
5. Joni Mitchell
6. Billie Holiday
7. The Pretenders
8. Madonna
10. Carole King
11. Patsy Cline
12. Blondie
13. Ella Fitzgerald
14. Fleetwood Mac
15. Patti Smith
16. The Supremes
19. Etta James
24. Dusty Springfield
31. Barbra Streisand
34. Dolly Parton
36. Björk
37. Donna Summer
38. Diana Ross
46. Kate Bush
61. Whitney Houston (for some reason)
65. Loretta Lynn
68. Hole
70. Abba
75. X
91. Sonic Youth
98. The Pixies
Subbed out solo females for their most succesful bands, and tried to be honest. Alanis could sneak in, but it's not 1999 anymore. As much as I LOVE PJ and Liz, Bjork will be the only prominent female 90s artist to place. You can take that **** to the bank.
People not here who could make it? Beyonce and Keys. Maybe Winehouse if they're feeling charitable. THE END.

VH1 Classic have made two top female artists lists of all time (around 2007-2008) since the 1999 list and Mariah has ranked top 10 in both of them. The Emancipation era got her in good graces with VH1 again.

Yes, Mary J. Blige but the problem is her international establishment. She didn't have an impressive catalog overseas to supplement her US foundation. And in effect, this is also an unfair scale with home-based artists who gets tons of recognitions as opposed to the others who thrive internationally (though local records aren't shabby at all). Example: P!nk.

You don't think Janet will make it? You think Kate Bush, Loretta Lynn, Hole, X, Sonic Youth and The Pixies will make it, but not Janet?
I've reconsidered Mariah, that probably won't happen. She is still not treated like a legend by the mass media. I understand Alanis because she is also a one-album wonder, but that one album happens to be one of the biggest albums ever.
What is up with Blondie being so high on that list?

He is a one-album wonder because Confessions is all he will be remembered for, unless of course he has some other massive smash era.

You think JT is that much more special than Usher?

Sis, Kate Bush and Loretta Lynn are more respected and adored than Janet has ever been, will ever be, etc and so forth. REAL TALK.
Sonic Youth is eligible for R&R Hall of Fame consideration - and actually made the long list last year. janet's eligible for R&R Hall of Fame consideration, and nobody's see her ass yet. HMM?
Eli, I love you but don't do me!
(And if you come for The Pixies again - well, I'll do things no mod should do.)

They're both worthless to me, but JT is more of a superstar, and at a younger age.

thank you. oh yeah to that one other person this whole decade was his smash era he had songs that hit the top spot in 2001, 2004, 2008, 2010, not to mentioned he finished 2nd behind Eminem as far as artist of the decade goes. By the way what has Beyonce actually done to have more of an impact than Usher? Besides having millions of stans posting for her on this site? Its just that everytime I hear Beyonce being mentioned on the list then Usher must be as well because Beyonce is the Queen of R&B and Usher is the King they go hand in hand that is why
