It's nothing ground-breaking, no, but I think it's a more than solid record. Very mature, evolved and well produced, considering they wrote and produced the whole thing (minus two they co produced).

I also feel proud that Alex Da Kid only produced on two, whereas he produced almost all of Night Visions. I guess NV's melodies were easier to digest than S+M, and that's why they prefer NV.

Yeah, NV is more mainstream, accessible, easy to digest. S+M is a heavier album I feel like. "Dense" has a bad connotation, but yeah

I think I liked NV a bit more, but I'm still pretty sure that this is gonna be one of the best albums of 2015 for me. SO good. And I'm So Sorry slays so ****ing much!

I still can't get into Friction tho Although I'm So Sorry is growing on me! So far my trinity is:
Polaroid
Shots
Smokes and Mirrors
Dreams and It Comes Back to You is growing so much on me too!

I really like Polaroid.
Friction is an overproduced mess, let's be real. There is way too much going on in that song.

Ok, I listened to this album once... Kinda didn't like it. I'll listen one more time, but for now it's about a 2.5/5 for me.

Smoke + Mirrors is nice lyrically, but other than that it's pretty boring. I like the guitar solo at the end, though. I'm So Sorry is great, but what is up with that piano-driven bridge?! Not a good idea... It sounds too out-of-place. I really like the folk-influenced sound of I Bet My Life, it's so full of energy! Too bad there wasn't much more of that influence on the album. Friction would be a bit better if they went in a different direction with the production. Dan sounds annoying on It Comes Back to You. I love the epic feel and sound of Dream, it's very reminiscent of Night Visions. Summer is pretty forgettable.
Faves: Shots, I'm So Sorry, I Bet My Life, Polaroid, Dream
Eh: Friction, Trouble, Hopeless Opus, The Fall
Duds: Gold, Smoke + Mirrors, It Comes Back to You, Summer
It's an okay album overall. Nothing on here really touches Tiptoe, It's Time, On Top of the World, or Bleeding Out. Night Visions is much more consistent in my opinion.

I'm so obsessed with The Fall right now. So many dimensions to it. The obvious symbol of autumn and things dying and turning bad/winter, a clear reference to how he feels about the fame...short-lasting, like he will lose it, he got what he wanted and he can't possibly keep it. But at the same time, it's a love song to his family, saying even in that worst case scenario, he still has the ones he loves, and that's all that matters, so because he has one stability, he's "ready for the fall."
It is absolutely excellent. Their lyrics are actually quite interesting. A little hard to understand sometimes (incorrect grammar lol), but very slowly, well-rhymed, and very honest

I would say that their lyricism is very good on this record. Probably better than the lyrics on Night Visions tbh.

S+M is not entirely a bad album. In terms of quality? It doesn't even come close to Night Visions. Not only did I love every song on NV, it was my favorite album of 2012, easily. This album, however, overall just feels kinda, meh to me. Even the songs they did for various soundtracks since NV (Monster, Warrior, Battle Cry, Who We Are) are stronger than the majority of the tracks on this album.
My favorite tracks are: Shots, Gold, IBML, Friction, Thief and The Unknown
Least favorite: Release, Second Chances, S+M, ICBTY, and Hopeless Opus.
I'll give this a D+ or a 2/5.
They're still my favorite band and I can't wait to see them live in June!

I really cannot believe so many people dislike the title track. I can't comprehend how!

Actually listening to the album, I Bet My Life is better than most of the songs so far. Shots stands out the most to me, everything thing I have listened to so far is rather meh

It's interesting to see the different sides into the opinions on the album. I became a big fan probably later than some people, but idk I basically fell in love with most of the album of the first listen.
It reminds me of the Evanescence fanbase during the The Open Door era.

After looping the standard version thrice, I can definitely say it's a solid record! I love it so much more now! Hopeless Opus is become one of my fave!!! The chorus is such a throwback!
