Don't let your hate cloud your judgement. They had bases all over the world due to World War 2.
Since that time they have scaled back significantly. Numerous countries that we used to control we gave independence (The Philippines, etc) and we have become far less interventionist than we used to be.
Yes they have a strong economic presence, but it is not the same thing as control.
