Janet like Michael have 4 essential albums and the rest you can really make your own compilation of hits and album gems to sustain you. Rhythm Nation is like one of the Top 5 perfect Pop albums of all time. I'm so in love with that entire era of her career. Velvet Rope comes next along with Control. I haven't tried All For You but janet. is too overwhelming and underwhelming for me so by default, AFY takes it place. I love all the singles and yes, I can feel my balls shrinking up when I listen to Someone Call My Lover but I don't care. LMAO

Janet's voice light and very melodic and she worked with the best team that knew how to produce her vocals and get the best out of her. Jimmy & Terry are essential as with Janet as Quincy Jones is when you talk about Michael. I respect Janet because she's never been pretentious like Madonna and easily slays her.

I think Again, Nothing and Everytime are some of the worst ballads, I've ever heard. Give Jan a slow jam or a sexy ballad and she's gold. I rather listen to Mariah and Celine when it comes to Pop ballads.

I don't think it was already mentionned but at the time, she was probably the first tomboy of pop music (way before TLC ,Melanie C, Pink, Avril Lavigne...).



She's probably one the best female popstar ever (with Madonna & Mariah).

I remember listening to "The Velvet Rope" and being impressed with the quality of the product.
A commercial album released by a big popstar as a follow-up to her biggest success yet still so out there as far as the themes evoked and the songs created. It had everything for everyone and didn't target just a certain category of people.
Differences were part of the album thus making them of less importance in the bigger scheme of things.
It also inspired many faux confessions albums such as Stripped or Rated R.

And look at that flawless live renditions of one the best contemporary r'n'b cut ever "I get So Lonely".

My favourites are probably:

• -The Pleasure Principle (whooooooooooow-wooow-oooow ! The kind of tracks that cheers you up and puts you in a good mood)
  
• -Funny How Time Flies ( a really cute song, very relaxing. I also listened to it recently with better earphones and it's probably her best vocal performance from the 80s)
  
• -State Of The World (A bold statement with amazing lyrics)
  
• -Livin' In A World (Who else can make songs that meaningful & relatable while speaking of such heavy matters ? The last seconds often gives me the chills)
  
• -Someday Is Tonight (I like the idea of the apocalyptic mood as a background metaphor for the frightening first sexual experience).
  
• -Love Will Never Do Without You ( So much escapism conveyed in one single track. A masterpiece)
  
• -Throb (It almost sounds like a **** soundtrack ! But the mix between nu jazz, dance & house music is a winner)
  
• -If (her most intense and hard-hitting single. The sample gives an epic quality to an already epic song).
  
• -Got Til It's Gone (A daring, risky & beautiful neo-soul inspired track. The production is on another level. So much memories).
  
• -Empty (The difficulties & emptiness of online relationships... Ahead of her time as usual. Besides, it kinda sounds like a Windows XP soundtrack. Smartly crafted to say the least).
  
• -Velvet Rope (Collaborating with Vanessa Mae was a stroke of genius. The song is so polished yet raw and brutal in it's meaning because it contains her smartest lyrical content).
  
• -Go Deep (The Tik Tok of 1997. There's a great 70s funky vibe throughout the song. Addictive).
  
• -Ropeburn (So erotic & fascinating. The vocals punches hard).
  
• -Doesn't Really Matter (perfect pop song. One of the only good things to come from the All For You nightmare)
  
• -Just A Little While (so underrated and we all know why. You can't not want to have fun while listening to this).
  
• -Slolove (Futuristic Janet. It suits her very well and the production is not too overwhelming so there is a good balance).
  
• -All Nite (Amazing song to dance to. It has aged really well come to think of it).
  
• -What's Ur Name (Great throwback r'n'b song. Killer chorus. Why wasn't it longer ??? f*ck, I'm mad !)
  
• -So Much Betta (Janet channeling her inner Michael. Quite progressive as far as the production is concerned. Good job).
  
• -2nite (So much charm & style. The track flows very well. Great chemistry between her voice and the instrumental).
  
• -Can't B Good (Great example of mature Janet with a nice interpretation and a touching production. Yes).
  
• -Rock Wit U (The Wordwide smash that never was. Well, it's still a great dance track. Her most credible one from the 00s).

Nothing is an embarrassment, but Again and Every Time are amazing. Again is just pop balladry at its sugary best, while Every Time isn't really supposed to be beautiful. It's just haunting and vulnerable.

"Again" is easily Janet's most overrated ballad. Just about all of other ballads slay "Again" to the pits.

"He Doesn't Know I'm Alive" is easily Janet's best vocal of the 80s, followed by "Love Will Never Do", if you're counting the actual release of the album.

The last few seconds of "Livin' In A World" is the reason why I don't listen to that song often. I just can't with that part.

"Rock With U" was just a global SMASH waiting to happen, so was "Feedback". Such a shame LA Reid thought he knew better than Janet.
