That's very much how it happened for GaGa too. It's always easier to pretend you were in on a joke the whole time then to lose face.

I agree that she operated on her ego, but it's unfair to say that all her acclaim/respect is by chance when so many good things have happened in her career. She has definitely had a role in her own success. I can see why you'd be disillusioned (the state of her music today), but everyone loses their sensibility at some point.

Very overrated. I think people are getting her respect factor mixes up with the actuak quality that is Madonna. She's very visual and knows how to execute a concept beautifully. However, the factore that go into executing it like singing and dancing are lackluster. Janet Jackson is the better dancer. Why Madonna is seen as a great dancer I wilk never know. Her singing is sub par tp say the least. She is a visionary and an icon and legend for what she has done for pop music and music as a whole, however she's highly overrated.

I've listened to Debutdonna, LAV, TB, most of LAP, most Erotica, BS (my fave Madonna album), most of ROL, some of Music and Confessions, and none of the last two.

I respect your opinion, and respectfully disagree. MJ's catalog is a little stronger in all aspects, and is more celebrated and acclaimed than Madonna's.

Every decade someone outsold her. (except when it comes to concerts).

Whitney Houston outsold Madonna all through the 80s and early 90s.
Mariah Carey outsold her through the 90s.
In the 00s she was just old.

But then again she is supposedly the best selling female artist of all time (depends on the source). But at the same time Mariah Carey came out a whole decade after her and Whitney's sales started going down after the Bodyguard whereas Madonna sales stayed steady.

Mariah has still released the same amount of studio albums so that point is void. More if you count her Christmas albums (although Madonna has more compilations).

Plenty of people came out long before Madonna, and several have had even longer careers (Cher, Donna Summer, Barbra Streisand, etc.), but they still aren't the best-selling women ("woman") of all time. It doesn't matter when anyone came out. Madonna did it, and Mariah's not going to surpass her, because her career is already in a worse state than Madge's.

Madonna only toured TWICE in the 80's. The first one was a small arena concert... she actually became a huge touring artist with the Blond Ambition Tour (after 1990).

During the 00's (her THIRD decade) she sold over 40 million albums (4 studio albums, 2 GH's, 3 live albums. And that's it.)
Not to mention she was BY FAR the top earning touring act and the top single seller worldwide.
