I think someone said it earlier, but there's a difference b/w sex-appeal and pushing sexuality. They're seperate, but somewhat of the same. However, there are female artists who refrain from doing so and still sell records. Don't get me wrong, some female artists who don't have sex-appeal are beautiful, they just don't exude that sex-appeal factor. For example: Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis, P!nk, Taylor Swift, Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill, Ashlee Simpson, for a while atleast. The list just goes on and on.
Annie Lennox ( ) doesn't really have much sex-appeal and yet she's still one of the most successful female UK artists EVER. It's all about the soulfulness of her voice.
Adele, Sade, Natasha Bedingfield, Lily Allen, Florence (+ the Machine), and Corinne Bailey Rae also come to mind. What can I say? The UK girls are classy.
And on the US side, you got P!nk, Jewel, and Sara Bareilles, among others. I wish Janelle Monáe had been more successful so I could've added her to this list!
Oh yeah and I'm surprised everyone's forgotten to mention Amy Winehouse. Zero sex-appeal there... at least for me.

^Pushing it or not, it was a sexuality Hilary never possessed before. Lingerie, breasts out, and yes belly dancing emotes sexuality. Mostly seen in a positive light, but she's not of culture or tradition and using it to sell.
And I'm not sure. I feel in certain cases it can be. We're not at a time anymore, I think, where it matters as much. At least in the music industry.

I see what you are saying and I agree completely. I see things from a different aspect when it comes to Hilary but at the beginning of her career she had no sexual appeal at all, of course this is because of her Disney connections, then she got sexual (or "matured") with the Dignity era. I feel like with her, it was just an upward step in growing as an artist but for awhile she was successful with sex-appeal.

Britney was more attractive back then. I don't know why, but she lost her magic after... you know what.
Just because she doesn't dress properly right now or doesn't really use make up properly doesn't mean she is not pretty. (Some y'all really crazy, she's on her damn break that's going to end in a matter of days) Remember she is a mom. If anything, be ready for January cause she's going to doll up for y'all to see.
