I've been thinking a bit about this extremely stale shade lately. On the one hand it's kind of true: she never would've been a musician if she weren't a Jackson. Her dad forced her into it! And she wouldn't have gotten nearly as much attention as she did in the beginning of her career if it weren't for Michael.

But guess what? Her first two albums still bombed. Even though they were released a year before and a year after Thriller (respectively). All of her siblings flopped too! She only became successful when she started writing her own lyrics and making great music with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Not to mention filming iconic videos.

So you really think someone could make a 30 year music career out of being a sister? You think someone could turn being a superstar's sister into being the most successful two solo siblings of all time, only because she's his sister? You think she can create touring demand and sell 70 million albums off Michael's name? Ok.

While she's relaxing and about to be a mother(), her legacy gets stronger and stronger by the day. "Control" was released 30 years ago and still thinkpieces are written about it.

She's constantly cited as an influence..her songs are getting sampled..she owns all her masters..she has her own record label..

She's leagues above the average pop star. An elite artist and Woman.

Tbh. Outside of Feedback and the MJ and wasn't aware of Janet's solo history before I joined atrl. But atrl didn't teach me about her. I saw a documentary on British television, and they also used to play loads of Janet medleys on music channels so that's how I got into her.

Kylie Minogue was big in Europe and was mostly irrelevant in the states, but she gets a pass and she doesn't have half the legacy of Janet.
