6. Tom’s Diner
(feat. Britney Spears)
– Giorgio Moroder
The absolute slayage of underground, indie artpoppist Britney Spears popping up on this voyeuristic cover version of "Tom's Diner" (which let's be honest I didn't know existed until Godney came along and blessed Giorgio with ha vocal powerhouse talent). It's just a bop, the beat drop is sick, the lyrics are iconic "I am sitting in the morning at the diner on the corner, I am waiting at the counter for the man to pour the coffee." Only a legend.
It's just a really great track, and other than Giorgio's weird heavily vocoded bit, it's great and a very interesting choice to have Brit serving a biT on this track.
Alright, and up next we have our first foray into my top 5 of 2015!
Anyone that doesn't at least appreciate or acknowledge this song as being a high point for Marina needs to get their ears cleaned cause there's is an undeniable lyrical, sonical, productional and experimental LEAP! It doesn't kill that the video is artistic and stunning and featuring on an amazing album either!
Froot in general just kills and made the wait from Marina worth it, plus the "Froot of the Month" marketing strategy was fun (until leaks and greedy fans ruined it, naturally).
The lyrics that have always CRUCIFIED me are:
"And I tried to say,
babe I'm gonna ruin you if you let me stay.
You still mean everything to me, to me,
But I want to be free."
Like yaasss ****ing queen I was not ready for you to ENTER my soul and speak my inner-most, privately held feelings and exploit them to the world for this smash song. Queen!
The entire Bombastic EP literally took my weave, the skin on my head and chipped away at my skull all in one 1-2-3-4 punch. Had it been an album and the other songs had been of the same quality, I'd be DEMANDING justice (inevitably) for it not selling 25 numbers.
"Wasted Youth" is lyrically the strongest track on the EP, with a lot of her "Teenage Dream" style ideas, and is kind of a better version of "Wide Awake," in terms of realizing the golden years of youth are running out and what that means for the rest of your life. There's one lyric that always punches me in the gut, and that's:
"Hold on, hold on to your wasted youth.
Hang on cause it's gone so soon.
And shine on, cause we'll never be the same.
Something about knowing that I can't help but change, and the person I am will one day more-or-less cease to exist, is quite scary.
