Ellie has mass appeal though. People just need to know who she is. They know her as "Lights girl" or "I Need Your Love singer". I think HWC could get her a solid fan base here in the US. Burn went top ten on US iTunes with no radio support, banner or promo at all. Not even an announcement. And Anything Could Happen went platinum with virtually no radio support. Ellie has the potential to become massive, she just doesn't take advantage of it.
You're right though, she needs a RITD like Adele. Burn/Flashlight/GG could be it.
Figure 8 was the hit that got away though. That could have been her hit that solidified her popularity in the US, seeing as she's on the verge of a breakthrough.
