So many songs I've liked so far. Wish I had been looking in this tread earlier. I'm shocked someone had Bowie's song on here. I didn't think many on this site would be into that one.

The best from this set is obviously Sufjan. That song is brilliant.
Edit: Yay at Miguel and Jamie too.

I think those songs are pretty great. Kelly's especially is a neat song.
Sufjan always delivers. That's for sure.

Sufjan and Hotline Bling

Me too It is an interlude, but it's practically a stand-alone song and really works. One of the little things that helps to make the album great.

Ari scalped me with a quickness.
I also may have taken out the song that was there before to make room for her

I just didn't spend enough time with Worth It this year I only heard it when I was out and on the radio. One of my biggest regrets this year
See? Your taste though Now & Forever is one of my favorites.

It's so good loveeeeeeesong! It's more R&B styled, pretty much everything I've been waiting to hear from her.
Thanks.

Also Worth It was a bop, and Heartbeat Song is actually a cute song. I don't really use Back Home, idk why
I have yet to listen to Ariana's EP
|
leaves is just incredible. Makes me want to make like a tree and leaf to buy a motorcycle and drive across the United States.
Back Home is a little weird as a song to be fair. I think it's a brilliant closer though. artrap or something.
Ari's EP was so much better than I expected an Xmas EP to be.

I had never really listened to them before, but I was impressed. Every song is pretty good. The album has that industrial pop goodness.

What was the controversy over the Miguel cover?
For some reason, I took forever to listen to Jamie's album, but had Gosh since it dropped

65: Tame Impala - The Less I Know, The Better
I'm starting to question my method for putting together my updates. They keep ending up having a loose theme. This update might as well be the retro update. I've never been a huge fan of Tame Impala's Beatles referencing psychedelia-accented pop (I've always thought, why not just listen to the real thing?), but they won me over a little with this album. The Less I Know, The Better is a groovy little pop tune that is easy to get lost in. The title is also one of my life mottos.

64: The Weeknd - In The Night
I wasn't a huge fan of the Weeknd's album. It just felt a little forced I guess. I miss his mystery and danger, and well, seeing him on The Voice and hearing his sugary pop hooks on the radio every five seconds did a lot of damage to that dark edge he may have once had that made him interesting. The album as a whole sat in a frustrating middle ground between shadowy R&B and full-blown neon pop, and it just didn't work to me, except on In The Night, the best pop moment on the album to me. It rides a relentless retro 80s neon pulse, no pretense, no shadow, just a full on blast of pop, and it works, just like its polar opposite, the introverted and doomy, Dark Times also worked best for me. Of course In The Night heavily references the late king of pop, but does so unapologetically, and gets it right. The grimey video is also one of the year's highlights.

63: Lana Del Rey - Honeymoon
If you listen to this one for a hook or a catchy chorus, you're doing it wrong. Zoom out a bit and put the focus on listening to the track as a whole and ignoring Lana herself, and it's all dramatic tension and eerie atmosphere. In fact, Honeymoon, the song, is actually all about atmosphere, those eerie strings alone are enough to set a person on an uncomfortable edge, floating along weightlessly, only swooping in occasionally to cut hard. It's Lana's most cinematic moment, sounding like the doomed opening credits to some tragic 70s love story.

62: Gavin Turek - Frontline/Don't Fight It
Well, I couldn't quite decide between the two equally good songs for this spot, so just decided to throw both in here. They are part of a dual single after all. I caught Gavin as an opening act for somebody last year and loved her show, but she didn't seem to have any solo material. So, I was really excited when I saw that she had an actual single earlier this year, and I wasn't disappointed. Both songs are throwback retro 80s jams, they don't just sound like the 80s like In The Night, they sound like they might have competed for play against a song like Borderline and maybe that's what the turbo-charged Frontline is going for, even down to Gavin's more unique vocal style. Where Frontline is energetic, Don't Fight It, is laid back, chill, and easy-going, yet effervescent. Both equally great halves to a whole single.

61: BOOTS (feat. Deradoorian) - AQUARIA
BOOTS, the guy behind a huge chunk of Beyoncé's self-titled album released his own album this year. For the lead-single, this song, he teamed up with ex-Dirty Projector (a band that people like to talk about and put on Best Of lists more than actually listen to) Angel Deradoorian for this weird swampy song. Ironically, AQUARIA fits somewhere between Beck's mid 2000s work and Bey's Self-Titléd, but it really works here. It's catchy, in the way that it sounds like it could soundtrack an Apple commercial if those were still a thing, but weird in the best possible way, sounding like the song melted halfway through the recording process.

Hints for next set:
60.
59. Kendrick Lamar makes another appearance on this second cut from an album.
58. An album cut from the album that in$pired my graphics
57. It's saxy. And pretty much obligatory on everyone's list.
56. The most recent single by a colorful band. An easy song to love

You prefer In the Night to Can't Feel My Face? In the Night is a bit more boring to me, but both are great songs nonetheless.

The Less I know The Better is one of my favorites from Currents.
In the Night is alright, haven't gotten used to it yet.
I like the Aquaria song. I haven't heard it until now.
I can't really handle the song Honeymoon tbh. It puts me to

Gavin is amazing, I almost just picked both but I picked the B-side.
Honeymoon is the best of Lana's slow long boring songs.

One of those songs that remind you why an artist is one of your favorites. It's a breezy folk tune, but only breezy in a way that an icy wind might gently roll over some little forgotten town in the middle of nowhere (which pretty much can describe all of Oregon from what I've heard). It's Sufjan so there's all kinds of allusions in the lyrics and those are nice also.
|
VERY TRUE (I spent last summer in an Oregon town like that! Great place to listen to Sufjan).

Absolutely. Can't Feel My Face is kind of obnoxious. It's all right, but the chorus is kind of sleepy and mumbly.

Honeymoon I could understand, but In The Night...
is pretty perfect, come on now.
In The Night she hears him calling
In the night she's dancing to relieve the pain
She'll never walk away

Yeah, I kind of cheated there by adding both.
Gavin was worth it though.
Thank you for agreeing, I like me a good nap, and Honeymoon is the way to get quality sleep.

Right, TLIKTB is great. The video won me over for In The Night, but also hearing it every other song on the radio helped to.
Fair enough, sleeping kind of one of my hobbies, so I do like me some Lana.
