It took this long for a Dierks Bentley song to appear here. I loved his album. I don't pay much attention to the trajectory of country singles, but it's my understanding that this flopped and there isn't enough bourbon in the world to make that ok. Dierks got backing vocals from an uncredited Kacey Musgraves (credited here for the ratings and to get you to be more likely to check out the song) and went big on this single. "Bourbon In Kentucky" might have a chorus that's typical county "there ain't enough bourbon in Kentucky to forget you," but its sold as if it's the world's biggest problem. All this is happening while shining U2esque guitars soar to the high heavens. It's the second best country single of the year, the best rock single, the best U2 single. "Once you've had the best nothing else will do."
09. Looking Ass - Nicki Minaj - Soundcloud Release/Forgotten Compilation Album/Not The Pinkprint
If I was being objective and didn't connect personally with some songs slightly more than this one, and I was making an objective Best Of 2014 list, there would e no finer single than Looking Ass. It's what The Pinkprint could have been, a classic. Everything about this song is so tightly focused and deliberate. The bleak beat hits harder than anything from Yeezus, that vocal sample is wicked and hypnotic, andNicki delivers her verses with a fiery coolness, it's her finest moment, her best single. That's not even mentioning the video of the year she offered. It's also the strongest feminist statement of the year. It's just her, in front of the camera. She's let down her natural hair and plays with it throughout the video. Even though she totes guns, it's her body and hair that's the most dangerous weapon. She plays with it, and holds it out for you to look at, but that's only to get you right where she wants you. She's in control and she knows it.
Your "Cruel World" write-up is so great, and I agree with most of it (not sure if I think it or "Shades of Cool" is my fav LDR song. Probably a coin flip between the two). I love "Holding On For Life" and After the Disco in general. You are def right that KRIT is underrated. I am very fond of "Something in the Water" as well, and i'm not typically a big Carrie fan. Jaws with the power of Jesus, that's exactly it haha! The London Sessions was a great Q4 surprise, and i'm glad you highlighted it. Midnight is such a great song, and I loved Ghost Stories in general. Love how they changed up their style. And thank you for highlighting "Invisible"!!! I feel like most people have forgotten about that song, but it was so good! I liked SOI more than you did, but at least we can both agree that "Invisible" is an underrated gem. And The Pinkprint really is great! It sounds like we look for the same things in Nicki, loving her more hip-hop-based songs. She is really one of the best rappers alive right now on a technical level, and I wish she was given more credit. And you're right that the more poppy/dance songs feel of a piece with the album as a whole.
Great stuff, as always!
Thanks Dr. Spaceman, can I call you Leo?
Thanks for reading my ramblings and such, especially on Lana. My Lana Del Ramblings if you will. I love Shades Of Cool too and Ultraviolence really grew on me over the year. So much so, that I think I might call it my favorite Lana record. And on U2, it's not exactly that I didn't like Songs Of Innocence. I really like a lot of the songs (did you see their stripped down performance of "No Ordinary Love" on Jimmy Fallon, one of my favorite performances of the year. It made me love that song and the live version really let the song breathe), I just feel that the production didn't work. It felt too confined and polished. Like they were trapped inside an iPod and were trying to bust out. I think that Invisible avoided that claustrophobic feeling, I am still looking forward to Songs of Experience, hopefully that means they have learned
Yes! On Nicki, Coldplay, everything else really. I haven't traditionally liked Carrie too much; but something about "Somthing In The Water" really sank its teeth into me.

I love Bottoms Up! need to check out Brantley Gilbert's album
Yes! At you getting into Caribou. Get into his 2010 album Swim. It's amazing! Odessa is one of my all time favorites.

I didn't like Midnight when it first came out. But I definitely see it's beauty. Though once it was midnight and I was listening to the album on earphones and it was pitch dark and this song came on and I got freaked out.
CRTFY's lesbian assplay Invisible is cute too!
Gaga is one of my fave yet I'm not bothered to listen to C2C. I still keep putting Bleachers off.
The Pinkprint is flawless
16. Taylor?
12. The New Classic
I think you missed the point of the explicit tags. There was clearly something in the water
We're like not liking Midnight at first twins I'm glad I gave it more time. your story though. That's happened to me many many times though One time from an upcoming album actually!
The Pinkprint is not as an upset as I thought it would e. We got a much different album than I was expecting or hoping for though.
Listen to Cheeck To Cheek!
Let me end by saying:

I loved everything about the song (the video too ) and played the heck out of it earlier in the year. It was before I started commenting here though

35. Break Free - Always been hot and cold with this song but I'd be lying if I said that I didn't bop to this one.
34. JFK - This was actually one of the first few tracks that I liked from BWET but I skip it now.
31. Magic - I so prefer this one over A Sky Full of Overrated-ness
I like some songs from Little Red like Still and Crying For No Reason ofc.
29. Talk Dirty - I secretly bop to this one, a guilty pleasure tbh.
26. Do Better - I always forget that Brandy is part of this song.
21. Chasing Time - One of my faves from BWET
17. Something in the Water - This song is so holy, ethereal, uplifting, all things positive
16. Best Mistakes - A bit overrated imo.
14. Midnight - I almost forgot that this song even existed.
13. You're Mine (Eternal) - I almost ditched this song as soon as I've heard this but thank God I heard the remix version, it made me like this song.
The Pinkprint, the wait for this album was worth it.
You need to get it together on Break Free. First you're hot than you're cold. Than you're yes then you're no
worthy comments
1. I forget Brandy is on Do Better - She makes the song!!!
2. Best Mistake is Overrated - The Ariana stans hate it though
3. I secretively bop to Talk Dirty - Just get jazzy on it openly
4. I forget Midnight existed - Self explanatory
Comments
1. Something in the Holy Water praise
2. Chasing Time Praise
3. A Sky Full Of Overratedness shade

The Pinkprint is such an upgrade from RR
I didn't listen to Grammy 2 Grammy that much but it's really good and you can clearly tell the collaboration between them is perfect.
Yet another thing I learned from this, you like Gaga
The Pinkprint is good, I just wish it were full of looking Asses
What can I say about liking Cheek To Cheek. I'm a huge Tony fan

Let me catch up on your list.
That's the title I will use for Mariah's album next time. Do you mind if I take it? Thanks for checking out my list.
I don't know though, 2014 was a little difficult for me musically.

Katy B's Little Red is a good album. It has a great flow, a consistent sound, and a couple stand-out moments. Crying For No Reason, is more than just a stand-out moment, it is a career highlight and one of the best pop singles of the year. The constant build, the momentum, the vocals, everything is hot like fire. It's so propulsive that it just doesn't let up and you can't help get swept up in it. The one thing that holds it back, if anything, is that there is no proper climax to the song, no release; but it's kind of fitting, if there was a resolution there would be no more Crying For No Reason. As it is, it's a fantastic single, the best Katy single of the year. About a year later and it still sounds as fresh as the day it cam out. We could be looking at a future classic.
Crying For No Reason is incredible. I've been stanning since the LQ acoustic performance was uploaded on YouTube like 3 months before the song was even out

Crying For No Reason is so good. I didn't hear the leak, thank god. I don't know what I would have done not being able to put it in my iTunes. To make things worse, the album came out much later in my country than it did everywhere else.
We do share excellent taste though

Lookin' Ass is okay, not really crazy and jumpy towards that song though.
I wish I had known of Crying For No Reason a lil bit earlier, it could have made my list.
Listen to him please! The song peaked at number 45 on the country charts. Putting that in pop terms, is G.U.Y. or Perfume levels of extreme floppage. The way I take it, in terms of his career, it would be like Katy missing the Hot 100, the Bubbbling under, and having the single go to the center of the Earth.
The song is amazing though and you can hear Kacey.
07. Problem (feat. Iggy Azalea) - Ariana Grande - My Everything
The best pop single of the year by far. Let me bring it back a bit. I loved The Way. I still remember hearing it on the radio for the first time and having to pull over to the side of the road to find out what song it was. It was that good. I bought Yours Truly the day it came out, and can say that it one of the best pop debuts of the decade. It's a better album than it had any right to be, she could have settled for mediocrity like some other singers, but she did not. This year, My Everything was probably the release I was looking forward to the most. She went in a different direction with that album, settling for mediocrity like most other singers (I still can't tell you what Why Try and One More time sound like, and the less said about the focus tested Love Me Harder, the better). It's a singles delivery device of an album (with all the best tracks: Only 1, Cadillac Song relegated to bonus tracks, only obtainable from the depths of Target) designed to make her image more mature with each single release (and it has worked, kind of). But one moment on that album took everything I loved about her debut and cranked that up to 11. Problem is the best pop song of the year. The sax hook, the escalation on the chorus, the (good!) use of Big Sean, Iggy's verse is a good break from the song, everything pops in the best possible way! It's fun, it's saxy, it's perfect. More of this for the next one Ariana.
Nicki gracing the Top 10 like she should.
I agree, this song and video was such a moment within pop culture last year. Nicki didn't hold back at all.
You know I love "Crying For No Reason", and you're right - it's potentially a future classic. In a couple of years when the decade is ending and we look back on some of the more magical moments of the decade, hopefully this song is still on our minds. Genius!
I'm really surprised that "Problem" has charted so high, honestly.
I still remember hearing it on the radio for the first time and having to pull over to the side of the road to find out what song it was.
Last update for a bit. A guy has work he's been putting off
Favorite 2014 Songs (06)
06. Tuesday (feat. Drake) [Club Going Up On A Tuesday? I've never really known]- ILOVEMAKONNEN (Really Drake though, let's be real) - Dreak Remixed Soundcloud Release
"Club going up on a Tuesday. Got your girl in the club and she choosay" Grower of the year and a testament to Drake's power. He made MAKONNEN go 0 to 100 real quick. Exploding from waiting around for the live action Shrek movie to working man's anthem of the year. I hated it when I first heard it, but it clicked soon after and I've been playing it since the day after the remix appeared on Soundcloud. This track is everything. It's gauzy, anti-gravity ounce is buoyed by Drake and Makonnen's sweet singing. It will lodge it's way into your head so much so that you'll never look at the worst day of the week the same way again. Drake, next do this for Majid, this is incredible.
Is this the last Drake track though?

Looking Ass was a moment. I will say that it's the best thing she has ever done!
Crying For No Reason is that good. It really needs to catch on.
I love Ariana. She has so much promise. I'm not going to lie, it's the truth. Only song I've ever done that for

Dierks is pretty great. Got me into country honestly.
Why would you call Tuesday the worst day of the week? Monday says hello!
Love this track though, it's a shame Makonnen is a dick but this song is a jam nonetheless!
