BBB is sometimes labeled a "flop" because it didn't live up to the expectations people set for it. It followed Tik Tok, which was one of the biggest selling digital songs of all time, but BBB's sales never compared to its predecessor. Sales were disappointing but not terrible, her second single should have sold a lot better.

Really? It barely has twenty million AI though.

It was expected to be a huge seller and to ultimately peak at number one, it didn't do either. Its sales were mediocre in the end, it got a good chart peak and I'm happy with that, but I think most of her fans were disappointed that it didn't top the Hot 100.

I never thought it would top the Hot 100. Good catchy enough song, nothing special.
The song sort of got screwed by selling so much before becoming an official single.
In the end, it sold more than, say, "Rude Boy," which topped the Hot 100 for 5 weeks.

Don't even get me started on Rude Boy, I have to admit I'm a bit disappointed with its sales. 2 million is excellent, but these days if you top the Hot 100 for five weeks with an insane amount of AI I expect triple platinum.
I mean, yes it was a smash but from its sales I would never have guessed it topped the Hot 100 for that long.

I didn't like the song that much either. The first single form an album is always has the best chance to go to number one and they messed up with Bad Romance. It would have been number one if they delayed the release for a few weeks to build demand.
It sold a lot before it became a single, but there was still the potential for it to sell a lot more. Its total sales in the end were not that impressive.
Rude Boy had huge airplay to prop up its sales. For a number one its sales are mediocre, but it was not number one because of what it sold. It never even peaked at number one on the digital chart.

I expect all number ones to be certified 3X platinum. Anything less is a disappointment.

#12, but her & Drake are neck-in-neck. She was #11 for a minute but went back down to #12 a minute later.

I'm really happy with how BR did, I don't really care so much that it didn't top the Hot 100. When I first heard it, with its raw vocals, non-happy/non-poppy vibe, and that in-your-face chorus, I thought, well there goes her first megaflop. Radio will NEVER play this, and the public won't buy it. Plus the song was loooooong. Radio-friendly songs are so short now. Hailey Williams recently praised GaGa for not being afraid to put out longer songs despite radio's aversion to them.

BR was a smash for sure, it is certified 4x platinum. I don't care that it didn't top the Hot 100, it made a huge impact on the music scene regardless.

I hadn't realized that BR was a bigger worldwide hit than JD

I knew it would be a smash straight away. It was predicted to flop but the people who were saying that radio wouldn't play it said the same thing about Poker Face. It got off to a shaky start but it recovered and performed extremely well in the end. I think some people needed some time to get used to it, for the US market the song is very unusual, it's not like anything else that is played there. The US market tends to be one-dimensional.

I've been busy this past week and haven't been checking up on the chart... and WOW... why the hell is Enrique #4!? I liked the song for a few days when it came out but it got old and annoying fast. Glad to see Em back on top with a good lead though! Ugh.. I'm so sick of Cali Gurls. There's no way I can wait till August 24th for another Katy song.. I'm hoping for an early leak!

Don't Worry...she is releasing the song "Teenage Dream" as a single before the album release.
And commenting on the whole smash versus hit thing....I was reading through all of what you guys said and it does make lots of sense...but at the same time I laughed so hard. It's kind of funny how we are even discussing this. And as one member said, it is all entirely subjective. I can give you guys a really relevant example that I actually saw at a music store today. On Enrique Iglesias' new album CD, it says "includes the smash singles I Like It and Cuando Me Enamoro". Obviously when they were pressing the CDs, neither of these songs were good hits (except for Cuando Me Enamoro).
It all depends on how you look at it...which is the good thing about the music industry and it's qualification process. Across multiple formats success can be had, and in sales success can be had. Being GaGaFan, it's a given that I think all of her singles are great successes. But she has had, IMO, 4 smashes (PF, JD, BR, Telephone) and the rest are hits.

Yeah. There are too many genres and many people in the US listen to a single genre...and nothing else.

I'm still angry at BR not peaking at no.1 on the Hot 100. One week, BR was 1 or 2 points away from her 4rd no.1, but ultimately lost out to ESOM.
LOL AT 4rd NUMBER 1 I meant 3rd

Sales = Airplay
and BBB underperformed (being her 2nd single after so much hype) it was not definitely a SMASH I mean, really? it was just a hit...

We need to get over that
"Bad Romance" was a US SMASH, a huge Worldwide SMASH.
