The lady in your avatar is a prime example of that. BTW's relevancy for the general public is nothing compared to her past generic & commercial music. I'm not talking about the quality, which is subjective, I'm talking about the impact and the sales.
The commercial puppets known as Rihanna and Katy Perry swept everything with their mindless pop songs.
You need to remember this is a market, commercial results are VERY important for everyone and the public is fickle.

And that just proves my point. Reviewers are taking in count the quality of the album, not if the album is gonna flop or if the album will be a commercial success. The objective of every reviewer is and should be to point out the album's flaws and solid points, so the general public can see that the album is a 'masterpiece', or just a commercial radio-friendly filled disc. What everyone in the industry has forgotten, is that music is art, and therefore everything that they do is going to have while on an artistic side, a critic, whether it is good or bad. Lady Gaga may have not be as you say relevant in the general public (while this seems contradictory, taking in count that she's the one with most followers on twitter and the second one on facebook, and her album has sold 8 million copies in barely 6 months, adding to it 4 top 10 hits, one being number one and breaking records), but she is truly garnering respect in the industry, in an aspect that she's above this generation artists, and in a way she's breaking rules, cause she's not making the typical music, she's trying to make a statement. Maybe that is why her albums are highly praised, and highly copied.
