The actors are all fine, but it's the script and direction that are at fault. The script is really weak and incredibly bland. There's no fizz in the dialogue whatsoever. Just actors delivering banal lines as best they can. The main problem though, is the sheer amount of boring action. I absolutely adore big action set-pieces in movies, but the action has to be clever, exciting and entertaining. There isn't a single memorable moment of action in this film, and yet it contains vast amounts of it. The action is so fast, it's just one big mess of over-saturated CGI visuals. The last 40 minutes of the film could be from any of the Transformers movies. Endless scenes of buildings toppling over and 1000s of people running etc etc, but at no point is it ever even *remotely* exciting or gripping. It's just tedious. As I say, the actors do as good a job as they can, and there are a couple of touching moments between Clark Kent and his earth parents, but aside from that, you don't really give a toss about any of it. It's all too big, loud and bombastic. It's a like a bloated Michael Bay action-fest. Zilch in the way of energy or thrills, and for a superhero movie, that's a serious problem.
6/10 at best.

You're absolutely 100% right. And that occasional "shaky-cam" effect was ROUGH. If you thought "Cloverfield" was hard to watch, try watching the beginning of "Man of Steel." There were moments where the camera was LITERALLY just jitterring from left to right spasmodically. I did NOT understand the need for that. Headache inducing. And when Kal-El meets his father for the first time -- the effect with using the Terminator-like metal to tell the story of Krypton in the background, that was ANOTHER nausea-inducing scene. The camera and the metal background was just NOT gelling together well. And you know what the biggest irony of all was? The fact that "Man Of Steel" was being obnoxiously promoted as the "more realistic" interpretation of Superman, when in fact, "Superman Returns" was more realistic and emotional than "Man Of Steel." C+

I can't fathom how anyone could enjoy Returns more than MOS. Then again, film is subjective like that. To me Steel is a much more entertaining and crowd pleasing film. Steel just feels true to the comic book material of Superman. It's nice to finally see a film based off the source material *Like Birthright and Secret Origin* and not based off the Christopher Reeve films *as amazing as Chris was and is*
Don't get me wrong, i think Returns has some good memorable moments. It was a decent love story between Lois and Clark, but it was a horrible comic book movie in general. It relied too much on the nostalgia of the Donner films. It was admirable what Bryan Singer tried to do, but the end result just didn't mesh well with me, and most of the general public agreed. Hell, i feel that film caused some of the constant "Superman is a lame and boring character" discussion with people.
That all being said, i feel Brandon Routh has gotten a bad rep. I thought he was fine in the film, he just didn't have a great amount of material to work with. I hope he gets a break soon. I loved him in Scott Pilgrim and Chuck.

While critical reception is important, at the end of the day the general public will make or break a film. They are the ones who will go to a film, they are the ones who will decide whether a film is a success or not. So far, it seems the reception from the general public is they enjoy this film more than they did with the 2006 semi-sequel.
Oh
And the superior Superman film is the iconic 1978 classic.
But hey man if you really enjoyed Returns more than Steel, more power to you

According to critics not the public.
Superman Returns lost me the moment I found out it was a sequel to the old Superman movies and that he had a child. Not only did he have a child but Lois was lying about it and pining it on another man.
Also the big climax was him moving a giant rock. Superman has all these powers and the best you can come up with was him moving a rock.
No...Just no.

Anyone heard the score? Although the movie doesn't achieve much on story and visuals, the score is ultra good.

Yes Hans Zimmer never disappoints.
_____
Wait...Superman Returns...better than MOS?
dddd; That film is a failed attempt at trying to capture the magic of SM I & II. Superman Returns almost had zero action scenes and Lex Luthor was the villian...again...for the 3rd or 4th time. The plot was just....why. Why you Why would make a sequel to a 30 year old movie, idk.
While I do enjoy some bits of SR, In my opinion, it was a missed opportunity and MOS is the superior film.
But hey, if you like SR better, that's fine, do you.

Holy ****, I was expecting so much more. Who the hell said ACTION from start to finish was a good idea? I mean it was not bad, but it was not good. I expected a lot more! Where was the damn storyline?

The action is more dominant in the second half sure, but the first half (besides the scenes on Krypton) is pretty action-light. (flashbacks, meeting Lois, discovering the ship, the stuff in Smallville, etc.)

This is so true. I've watched it twice and it doesn't feel like 2+ hours at all.

Da TRUF.
I'll say that I preferred it over X-Men: First Class - and I really liked First Class.
I just hope this leads to the JL movie being put on the fastrack.

This is definitely just a case of critics being harder on one movie than the other.
Superman Returns was incredible lazy and far TOO reverent. I don't think it's as bad as say... Green Lantern, but it's certainly not better than MoS.

What was interesting to me about this movie was how it takes on the subject of the superior male, and the masculinity crisis of the 20th and 21st century. Nolan's presence definitely helped this movie a lot. Had he not been involved it probably would have been another style extravaganza of Zack Snyder. so I really enjoyed it, and also Henry is the most beautiful man alive That might have clouded my judgement a little.

Complaining about too much action in a Superman/Superhero movie?

'Man of Steel' opened to a huge $44 million yesterday. Including Thursday's shows, it's now earned over $56 million: http://t.co/bM2ZTxacBW
