I agree. I think the fact that it's an original song makes it better. There's no reliance on a classic for it to be good.

TBH Tom's Dinner's biggest problem is Giorgio, not Britney. The vocals are supposed to be rather monotone, that doesn't bother me as much as the fact that Giorgio didn't push the song in a new, more interesting direction. Most people have heard the original, or a dance remix of it. He needed to reinvent it or not do it at all.

And to the Britney stans, yes I'm sure there are tons of people who love it. That's great. This isn't a post to say that everyone is going to hate it so stop making such a big deal about someone being critical.

But sure, let's talk 7/11. It's a very obvious tongue-in-cheek song. The video further proves out not seriously Beyoncé takes it. Tom's Diner is an iconic and beloved song. To do a cover of it and not have it live up the original is disappointing. Comparing 7/11 to this is different, though it is a good point that I would never use 7/11 to show her artistry, but then again when it came out most Beyoncé fans were not saying things like "THE VOCALS ARE FLAWLESS" and things the way that the Britney fans are treating this song now.

I disagree. I don't think there's a point in a cover if the song's been too reworked. I like that they left the Suzanne Vega touch in there.

I think you feel disillusioned because you're more in touch with the remixes. Most of the GP today only know the "du-du-du-du" sample and those of us that are culturally literate enough to know "Tom's Diner" only know the a Capella. I agree with you that it's far from his best work (though it is his best work in two decades by far, imo) but I appreciate that there's a solid distinction between the 1987 version and the 2015 version in the addition of an instrumental but it still holds that samey, monotonous feel that made the original so unique and memorable.

Plus, I think Britney sounds heavenly. Despite the vocoder her voice sounds so pure and the top layer is unaltered and sounds very 2001-era Britney to me.

When I started to learn english in school (in 1997), my teacher, who was probably a Suzzane Vega stan, made us learn this song by heart and translate the words from english to hebrew.
So this was the first ever english song I actually knew it's meaning and all the lyrics.

I can't believe that 18 years later, my fave is doing a cover of this song.
