That's a privilege that isn't afforded to the people we are imitating.

hmm.. actually kinda interesting to think about

To claim that you’re a minority woman just for the sake of laughs, and to say that the things allowed her or the things enjoyed by her are done better by you isn’t cute or funny. First of all, it’s aggravating as hell. Second, it’s damaging and perpetuating of yet another set of aggressions against us.

You know what it is a lot of the culture is misappropriated and certain individuals do feel like they can relate to their others because of their struggle. I can understand why some may find it to be offensive especially being black and gay but its this reasoning and segregation between minorities in general that prevents all discriminated communities from coming together in order to address these issues. Even during the civil rights movement a lot of women's rights were left out of the picture and believe it or not everything has to be addressed at once for any real progress to occur.

I do hope you realize that the fact that you and many other Black Americans subconsciously believe that by speaking proper english and not having obvious stereotypical black american mannerisms means that you're "Acting White",
is a remnant of the problem at hand.
|
I don't personally believe acting in any manner is acting "a race" other than your own. But black people are constantly held up by their own community that if they speak a certain way and dress a certain way, they are "acting white".
And don't tell me I don't know, I have been on the receiving end of the criticisms for YEARS.

When white gays steal from black female culture it's funny even expected. When black people are actually black, the gays get upset and start insulting black people for being black when they've been imitators. Here is a clue. People identify with people being themselves not putting on an act to be the entertainment. If gays want to be treated equal and all that jazz be gay and stop being the joke.

Stop marginalizing gay people because some of them like to lip sync to hip hop and shake their ass?

Shame on them.

Pretty much what I thought of the actual article, it was trash. The topic as a whole is interesting, though.

You clearly didn't read the article very well if that's what you got out of it.

You know NOTHING and you don't understand.
You are basically implying "Why white people can't say the n-word? SEGREGATION!!!"

Near the end of the article she mentions "strong black female" and "rachet girl", she isn't saying that's what all black women are, but those stereotypes and exaggerated mannerisms are the ones that people latch onto. The article is against those stereotypes and against black women being reduced to them. Look at the first post, listening to Beyonce makes that poster feel like a rachet girl.
I've seen Beyonce called ghetto, ratchet, a sassy black woman and an independent woman who doesn't need a man. That's a result of stereotyping and it being acceptable to say these things. Black women should be viewed as full human beings not these five traits is at the heart of this article. If people stopped with the "I'm a black woman because of x, y. and z", that'd be easier.

Way to generalize. Not all gays insult black people or are against them.

I feel like some people stopped reading halfway into the article and missed some of its most salient points so I'll repost them here

Claiming our identity for what’s sweet without ever having to taste its sour is not. Breathing fire behind ugly stereotypes that reduce black females to loud caricatures for you to emulate isn’t, either.

All of this being said, you should not have to stop liking the things you like. This is not an attempt to try to suck the fun out of your life. Appreciating a culture and appropriating one are very, very different things, with a much thicker line than some people think
|
Like, some of you seem to think the author is trying to say it's offensive for a white person to enjoy rap music or something. That is not what she's saying at all.

It's funny because the article is actually written by a black woman.

My "playing the victim" post was to do with the stealing culture bs that just doesn't happen. Twitter racism is a two way street though, the amount of "white people be like" "white people shoot up schools" "white people have no lips" "#TweetLikeAWhiteBoy" "cracker" posts I see daily
Of course I'm not naive enough to believe white racism is anything comparable to black racism in the real world, but often, in 2014, black people are their own worse enemy when it comes to equality.

They're commenting on society's generalization of those two groups of people, which you must admit exist. Public perception, however wrong it may be, is powerful.

Is it ever any less relevant? All you people bitch about is privilege and oppression and who's more oppressed, blah blah blah. I'm sure this is doing OH SO MUCH to help the idea of equality.

It's 2014, stop playing the victim all the time

Unfortunately it's difficult for someone in the UK to truly understand Black American sentiments.
You guys don't really have the same problems with race like we do, so I think it's best for you to respect
that it's an issue for some, instead of panning it and making comments that make you appear ignorant.
