The Dems won 5 elections in a row (1932, 1936, 1940, 1944 and 1948), though 4 of those were under FDR and encompass World War Two (not the average election climate). Since then it's largely gone in turns of 2 (the only 3-streak is Republican).

So, yes, there is some anti-Dem incumbency, but you must factor in that we live in one of the most progressive eras of American history (mostly because of the Internet). The Republican 3-streak (Reagan, Reagan, Bush Sr.) happened because it was one of the most Conservative times internationally (see Margaret Thatcher ruling Britain at the same time).
So my tl;dr is yes, it is uncommon, these days, for a party to win 3-in-a-row, but if you had to bet right now, all your money should be on Hillary because the GOP is in a ****ing mess.
