I watched the movie weeks ago and loved it. It really hit home for me, because of its focus on the strength of the individual and finding your purpose in life.
Ryan had no one to go to back on earth and it was beautiful to see her finding herself, letting go of painful ties with the past and finding the will to survive and live. She was a hero for herself and that makes her a hero for the world.
I also liked that it was free of typical cliches from this space sci-fi movies:
We never got to see reactions from the people on earth and that MADE A LOT OF SENSE because nobody on earth knew exactly what was happening with the crew on space since they lost all communication and vice-versa. There was always a deep sense of danger throughout Ryan's whole quest and even though the movie had been mostly marketed on the power of its special effects, the characters and their adventures, tragedies and self-exploration as human beings were even more amusing and special to watch.
