Maybe, but probably not. The difference between Madonna and Lady Gaga is that Madonna actually has legitimate artistic merit, Lady Gaga doesn't. Lady Gaga's goal is to be controversial. Madonna's goal (back in the 80's/90's, "when she was popular") was to be a forward-pushing artist. Madonna's "SEX" book, for example, wasn't about shock value -- it was a legitimate work of art, as opposed to Lady Gaga's "nudity stunts."

So Madonna would have most likely survived on artistic credibility alone, something which Gaga doesn't have. Lady Gaga will never be looked upon as a "legitimate artist," everyone will always see her as "a singer who wants to be controversial."
