Listen to "No Angel"
The lowdown: Brilliance often goes unrecognized, especially on a track that strays so far from what we’ve been conditioned to expect from a pop girl album in this post-Dr. Luke world. Free from massive hooks and heavy-handed production, Beyoncé is a commanding presence, flitting over the sparse bass groove in breathy falsetto, shameless in her shortcomings and her womanly desires. She’s no angel—just empowered, unapologetic and deeply, deeply sexy.
ATRL says...: Neither Himeros nor bluth enjoyed Beyoncé's vocals. Himeros called them "hugely tedious. I can't stand it. Whenever I listen to it, I feel like my throat needs a glass of water PRONTO." bluth thought they felt "more strained than an album filled with overt sexual adoration for Jay-Z."
They were in the minority, however. J. YONCÉ wrote that "No Angel" was the "grower of the album. That breakdown at 1:31 is so awesome and is a really 'visual' moment." Dark Miracles called it "Beyoncé's crown jewel," adding that it "should at least make top 5." adrianbeane thought it was "severely underappreciated." lovesong boldly claimed, "This is one of her best moments in her entire career. The production is flawless and her vocal delivery is insane."
Best bit: "'Cause you're. No. An. Gel. Either, baby"
