No one's talking about critics. See this is your problem, the show is finally stabilizing and recovering from that god awful season and you can't be happy for it because of your clear bias, talking about how 'monsters' are the only ones loving gaga's performance in this episode, trying to make that 'curse' happen and looking a FOOL when it actually does decently. We've gotten way past the point of bias against Gaga. I know when she does well and I'll praise her when she does, but this week was not one of them. She was good in her modern day scenes, though, but they were minimal compared to her wretched flashback ones.

I'd be happier about the ratings if the episodes deserved them. This broke the episode 7 curse because it was better than them but it still was not a good episode and far from the best. I'll account contrasting opinions to personal taste but the one thing you cannot say was that this was good (let alone her best) acting. Everyone was bad bar Kathy & Alexandra.

Initial Metascores of the first ep or 2 are actually a poor gauge. A better one would be year-end T10 lists and where the shows ranked:

TIE16 Asylum
TIE15 Coven
N/A (on 0 lists) Freak Show

So Freak Show is ultimately by far the LEAST acclaimed. It's like judging an album just by its first single or two vs. as a whole.

And in the ratings, Coven>Freak Show.

This episode was good, I actually liked it better than last weeks. The great thing about this episode is that everything was tightly contained and there didn't seem to be any filler. It was the most entertaining episode since Chutes and Ladders.

Evan telling Elizabeth that he'd never let her go seems like it will end up being a call back by the end of the season. I loved those two together btw, they had great frenetic chemistry.

I was kind of disappointed that Alexandra Daddario's character wasn't Mimi DeLongpre and that Elizabeth was just a simple girl from Brooklyn. Those scenes with Valentino/Elizabeth/and wife were kind of hammy, and I was like "lol, WTF" at first until I just embraced the cheesy campyness.

If anything, I'm glad this episode made it clear that everything Gaga's been doing up to this point has been intentional (the icy line delivery, the calculating glances, the domineering "posing" that her detractors keep harping on) and that she was finally given enough material to flesh out her character more (and she killed it). I actually felt like I was watching a fully-formed person this episode instead of a one-dimensional idea and that made her so much more compelling.

I H A T E Freak Show but the ratings were the highest. And we'll see where Hotel ends up! I do hope we get more Mommy/Room Service/Room 33 like episodes instead of this ******** and Devil's Night.

It was not bad writing.

I'll give you the acting I guess but that's only because I too was over analyzing every scene.

I definitely don't agree that the pacing was bad. The Countess didn't have a complete 180 like characters in other seasons have had. We learned little by little until her complete backstory was laid on us last night.

Edit: I maybe would've agreed it was bad writing if the Valentino/Natsha reveal hadn't happened.

What about Marcy? Her death was the saddest of the episode. She was a great character in season 1, and her 2 cameos this season were equally hilarious. Plus the sadness that she had to put Hallie down. I wonder what else from season 1 will pop up.

Besides that, Lady Gaga's stiffness has improved. Her blood curdling shriek at the end was a great touch.

Not much Kathy Bates or Chloe Sevigny (who I despise as an actress yet is my favorite character this season) and no Angela Bassett.

Overall, AHS has used flashbacks in more efficient way before (were there multiple flashbacks in the flashback itself?), but this wasn't a bad episode, if a little too focused on its old Hollywood influences.

Gaga's shriek at the end was the best acting she's done all season. "That's... What was BAAACKK THERE?!?!?" Had to rewatched a couple times. She brought the terror.

Finally. FINALLY! I could not take my eyes off the screen the entire episode. Every second of the show was spot on.
Gaga actually showed some skill here tonight. I thought she was convincing in her fear, convincing in her flapper-actress-wide-eyed-ingenue turn... Convincing throughout the episode, which was a little revelatory. She actually acted, rather than posing and looking imperious, and it was great.

They just better not screw up the finale with some ******** twist or something. Ryan Murphy might just redeem himself with this one. MIGHT.

I've always been one of her detractors as far as the show is concerned, but I have to give her props for tonight's show. And... I get the imperial attitude better. I think I had an aversion to her playing it so cold and untouchable (and that god-awful clipped manner of speaking) but now, having seen the real Elizabeth... I get it. She's shut off, shut down, and it's all a cover.

Let's not forget how you acted this was the worst episode out of the bunch yet it didn't continue to fail ratings-wise. How you were talking about the flashbacks being so poorly done yet everyone else seemed to enjoy them. How the 'CuRSeee of thE '7TH EpiSOde is REaL'...

I literally do not give a **** bout the "CURSE!!"; Marty & Phenex were the ones worrying about that, and I do NOT care that it's Gaga. She was just bad, and that's my goddamn point. If even Emma did that mess I'd be spamming it like this. You take everything negative I say about her as some spearheaded attack on her which is not the case.

And it's not the worst episode.

The first half of the episode was horrendous and practically ruined it for me. It got better in the second half but couldn't save how wretched the first half was.

My family actually enjoyed gaga's acting last night as well, I was pleasantly surprised! I just didn't like some of her facial expressions but that shriek she let out SLAYED ME!
