2002-2005 was 75% R&B/hip-hop

Rock was smashing. (U2, Linkin Park, Green Day)
AC was smashing (Michelle Branch, Norah Jones, Daughtry)
Country was smashing (Toby Keith, Dixie Chicks, Carrie Underwood)

Hip-hop dominated but the alternatives were there.

I don't think we have that diversity now, though I feel like we might be slowly getting back to it.

I think he meant the upper portions of the charts. It was mainly urban music dominating. If you look at Mediabase's biggest radio hits list, you see that it's all urban music released between 2002 and 2007.

Yeah, I mean Since U Been Gone was a huge hit, yet its AI peek was only 87. At the same time some of those urban tracks the same year had AI peeks of 200+ million.

I'm looking at some of the charts from the '90s. It was very diverse during that decade, but Hip Hop/R&B was very visible, especially in '95. I wouldn't be too shocked at a Hip Hop/R&B revival sometime this decade.

Hip/Hop had a strong year last year. RnB Ibelieve can make a comeback this year. Usher, Alicia, The Weeknd, Frank Ocean could do really well for RnB this year.

I was glad the Hip Hop/R&B domination faded. It was great when it started, but in its final days, we had crap like D4L, Soulja Boy, UNK, Dem Franchize Boyz, Mims and Hurricane Chris. Thanks, but no thanks...

Yeah, there were literally no non-Urban/Rhythmic #1s from 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005. It was this insane drought- and it wasn't till mid 2006 when digital sales finally became large enough that a Pop single went #1. And that was kinda the turning point to a more Pop/Rhythmic sound that JT and Timbo brought in, which obviously progressed to dance.

2004 was the absolute peak for Urban music, though. Every single #1 was straight up Hip-Hop- no questions asked. Lean Back, Goodies, Slow Motion, Yeah, Burn, Confessions, My Boo, Drop It Like It's Hot....all 100% Urban. As for the massive audience impressions, wasn't it reported that they over estimated Urban and Rhythmic audiences at the time? I remember many Rhythmic #1s in 2004-2005 having up to 85 million AI from that format alone- it was unreal but not uncommon. That's why so many songs were getting 175-200+ AI, it was practically the norm for all the big hits.

I think the way the Hot 100 was compiled (AirPlay only pretty much from 2002-early 2005) is why it seems like Urban was so dominating but other genres were definitely popular and other artists were having success without having to make Urban music. That can't be said for music now because almost everyone is incorporating dance into it. "Popular" music is much more homogenous now, although it does seem to be changing.
