Coldplay are not alternative at all.
They are gonna be pushed hard by any pop radio, it's just too soon to see it; They are mainstreamer than mainstream... it's actually one of the reason first fans type are disappointed in anything post X&Y, because they say they've turned totally pop.
I agree about that, but to me it isn't a problem at all.
Paradise is a definite contender for next number one starting from October.
And their radio rate for it is gonna be way bigger than it was for ETIAW (which did quite well for being just a promo single very far away from the album release date).
Coldplay are a powerful pop force.
Guitar pop with attitude, still mainstream guitar pop by now.
Adele has competition now, though it would take enough for her to perform live a couple of times, to make even Coldplay fade away in any chart.
