Just wrote/produced a song called Today's Gonna Be My Day! It's very dark, the title's supposed to be sarcastic in a way. It's very hard to explain without actually hearing it. Hopefully it can go towards an EP I'm working on, Undiamonds, which will be the sequel to my last EP, Anti Roses! So far I have two new songs one for the new EP, and I'm hoping by the end I'll have at least seven. On my last EP I was trying to make it sound very cohesive but this time I'm just making songs sound like anything and slapping them together!

The newest song I was talking about at the beginning of this post is so long for me; four and a half minutes. Most of my songs are about three minutes. Something about making a long song feels self-indulgent to me, although I guess all art forms are self-indulgent.

Can anyone give me advice/tips?

I'm having trouble writing. I know exactly the topic I want to write about, but words just don't come out!! Especially since they have to rhyme and a catchy melody. Any tips on how to overcome this?

Tip 1: Do not be fooled by the aspect of popular writing. You are not chained to rhyme scheme nor melody when it comes to your lyrics.

Tip 2: Write down words/titles that you think goes perfectly with your topic. If the topic was "the one I loved doesn't love me anymore", words that could go well with that are "alienated, abandoned, exiled, no longer chained, gone, despair, broken, etc…" and try to build lines off of that.

Tip 3: If you do subscribe to popular writing, your rhyme scheme shouldn't be a domineering factor. Come up with one line, then try to use a rhyming dictionary to find the word you want to rhyme best with it. b-rhymes.com is a popular choice since it features words that almost rhyme as well.

Tip 4: If you still are subscribed to popular writing, your melody should either revolve around the key of your song, or it should revolve around the fifth of your key of your song. The key note allows for easy to approach, the fifth allows for harmonic approach. The key would be more melodic, the fifth would be more rhythmic and allow for more words. Emotions follow the key.

But it helps, immensely. You should at least have a strong grip and capability to write with structure and save the alternative as an occasional break away.

When you're tied to a rhyme scheme, you're left with little to say and you can hardly say what you want. When you're tied to melody, same problem arises. If you're not tied to one, it's safer for you to make the right words without sound trite and elementary. When you're free of both, you have freedom to express yourself.

In the long run, those two are only used to build up your ability. But if you already feel you have a good grip on songwriting, rhyme scheme should not even be an issue because you'll already be able to do it on your own. Thinking of a rhyme scheme only hinders the true thinking process. And melody shouldn't be an issue because all you really have to know is your key and the pentatonic scale and you can make nearly any "popular" melody out there…

Just wrote a song called Good Anthropocene! It's about how some people have this idea of the "good Anthropocene". "Anthropocene" is basically the era of time which has begun in fairly recent history where we all will die and the apocalypse will occur because of how humans have totally trashed the Earth.
