"Passion" was released on December 14, 2005 and was the 4th single released from the 'ULTRA BLUE' era. The song was used It was used as the theme song for the Disney Interactive Studios/Square Enix game Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance in Japan, while an English version also sung by Utada, titled "Sanctuary", was used for the international release of the games. Because of this tie-in the song and it's english counterpart became one of Utada's signature songs amongst her Western fans. The video was partially shot in Gung-Ho Films studios in Beijing, China and directed by Utada's ex-husband Kazuaki Kiriya. The single peaked at #4 on the Oricon singles chart.
"TABOO" was released on October 8, 2008 and was the second single released from the 'TRICK' era. The dance number was produced by HIRO and features lyrics written by both HIRO and Kumi herself. The song is regarded as one of her signature songs amongst Western fans. The music video for the song evolves around the exploration of sexuality even including some homo-erotic behavior. When the single hit #1 on the Oricon singles chart it became her 5th single to hit #1 on the Oricon singles chart. The song was later certified platinum by the RIAJ.
