It's a lot of words and no hashtags and no pictures of weed so I'll highlight the, um... highlights.

Rihanna fans duped by flat show — if you can even call it a show
Hurry up and wait … and wait. For not much.
Despite proclaiming her love for the 13,500 temporarily displaced clubbers and drunk girls, teens, parents and kids who filled the Saddledome last night, Rihanna didn’t respect them enough to show up on time. In fact, a full 100 minutes after her scheduled 9 p.m. start time, it was abundantly clear that she couldn’t have cared less.
Maybe it was all par for the course. Because, if it comes down to the difference between showbiz or live authenticity, last night’s fashionably late semi-musical fashion show at the Scotiabank Saddledome was easy to identify.
Yes, it was a clear case of style over substance during Rihanna’s much-anticipated, and eventually bemoaned, return to Calgary. The 25-year-old manufactured R&B-flavoured pop diva, who typically makes headlines for other reasons beyond sheer musical mettle, provided eye candy, video screens, costume changes, confetti cannons, crotch-grabbing, fire pots, laser lights, moving stage production, pomp and circumstance … but very little else of what you would expect from a bona fide pop superstar.
By the midway point of the show, after several instances of obvious lip-synching, you couldn’t help but feel as if you had been duped. It turns out that, indeed, you had.
Following an introduction of Mother Mary, the star of the show kneeled at the front of the stage and then delivered a few club-bangers in the form of Phresh Out The Runway, Birthday Cake and Talk That Talk.
Which, despite the lip-synching (a live mic in hand accompanied by a crystal clear vocal track behind it — often at her waist), should have all been well and good. Honestly, the obvious expectation of ten professional dancers and their esteemed leader strutting out in full force would be some high-energy, electrifying, and highly choreographed routines. Right?
It came off as anything but.
Tired, unenthusiastic, uninspired, loose and banal, Rihanna failed at the very thing for which the entire premise of her performances are based; putting the “show” in showbiz pop.
Following Pour it Up, and Numb came the first of what would be several mini-intermissions and costume changes. Now, if the onstage energy had only matched the eye candy …
The pseudo reggae-infused pop forays of You Da One, Man Down, No Love Allowed and Rude Boy were musically palatable, but the similarities of each resembled one 20-minute song. And it was on to the next mini-intermission and costume change.
Great.
Umbrella was a great pop single and it still is. The members of the crowd that hadn’t left p---ed off went bonkers for the 2007 monster hit, which was quickly followed by All Of The Lights, Rockstar 101 and What Now. Easily the best segment of the show, but far from setting the Earth on fire. And … you guessed it, the next mini-intermission.
More people headed for the exits (mostly parents with exhausted kids), others waited for the next intermission and costume change. It was that kind of night — disappointing and predictable.
The Barbadian bombshell’s main set had yet to conclude at press time, but she has been ending most nights on the current Diamonds Tour with Stay and, uh, Diamonds.
Opening the show was 24-year-old New York rapper Rakim Mayers, aka A$AP Rocky.
Inspired by the old school of hip-hop, he provided the only instance of anything resembling urgency or spontaneity on this night. Plus, the Solomon Burke-inspired white throne at centre stage was a nice touch!
Flanked by a four-piece bass-heavy band, A$AP Rocky had the joint jumpin’ through bursts such as Long Live A$AP, Wassup, Wild For The Night, Kissin’ Pink, F**king Problem and Peso.
