I kind of agree about UB, but BLUE is in my Top 3 Utada songs ever
First Love is actually the only one I don't care for as much on it. Automatic-Sus. For a teen album, its head and shoulders beyond some others that came out at the time.
I think Distance is definately her most underrated though. Its full of gems like For You, Parody, Distance(original and m-flo mix).
Utada/Ayumi stans. If I want the Kumi or Namie sound I might as well listen to Ciara or something.
& you can easily get Utada's early R&B sound from ANY R&B girl from the 90s and her ethereal sound from Bjork. While Ayumi's sound can easily be found from any Western balladeer or pop-rock girl.
Let's not act like Utada & Ayu are some original works of art either

That's why I don't really use Utada's first two albums. And the Björk comparison is a bit of a reach. I have made it myself before but they are still very distinct artists.
What makes Ayumi unique is her chipmunk voice. No one else sounds like that (while at the same time still sounding so pleasant).

There's nothing that sets Namie and Kumi apart.
Ayumi's voice is hardly pleasant
& it's funny how you were praising 'This Is The One' earlier when there's not one ounce of a originality in that album, but that doesn't make it a bad album.
Namie & Kumi wouldn't be as successful as they are if they were just one of the crowd.

Ayu's voice is beautiful and awesome.
And of course originality isn't everything. Music simply has to be good. What helps Utada is that she too has a very distinct and beautiful tone.
Namie and Kumi's voices are way too boring for me. Which is fine if you can make up for it with interesting/catchy melodies and production, but for me they also fail in that department.
How?
