Alexander, how are the suggestions from the survey doing?

So far, I've done the following based on survey responses:
- Added some tips for writing reviews to the OP (78% of those who hadn't written a review said they had not b/c they didn't feel like they could write a good one)
- I'm on the verge of doing a 'throwback album/single' from 2013 because that has been one of the most requested features throughout the whole lifespan of this thread and in the survey.
- There have been several suggestions for incentivizing reviews. I'm not quite sure how to go about that, but I am thinking about it.
- People have also suggested a separate "Reviews" section of ATRL, but that would involve a major overhaul and I am not considering that as an option at the moment.
- There is a majority of support for a Top Critics feature. Some have asked for polls to determine it. I have already contacted a select group of people that I consider to be Top Critics, and we briefly discussed a potential Top Critics set a few weeks back. I'm not quite sure how to go about implementing it, though.
Any additional input from anyone is greatly appreciated. So far, I think people have come up with a lot of good ideas, it's just a matter of coming up with ways to implement them.

Are there any singles people want to review (whether they are new releases or simply songs that are just getting popular now)?

Also, why don't you feature throwback reviews for classic albums?

The way I see it, the number of people reviewing is going downhill. If anything, a major overhaul is needed. A "Top Critics" feature is good coz we need to replace that modscore, but it's not gonna encourage people who have not been reviewing to review.
I think a Reviews section would be the best way. Idk if it's within the mods power to create one, but it could function the same way as the yearly Best Of section, or like how under Base there's Fan Bases, Discussion, Polls, so maybe it's possible to include a Reviews?
I think I've already described this to you but I guess I wanna share it with the others. This Reviews section could work in 2 ways.
1) People create their own threads where they post their own reviews in that thread. It helps with branding which may encourage people to review more.
2) People create a separate thread for every album/song. It makes things a lot neater than it is now and alexander wouldn't have to be the one doing everything cuz different people could make the threads. Also, the review period could be varied.

ILoveMakonnen (feat. Drake) - Tuesday is my suggestion for a song. It's not new though, but just went Top 10 on iTunes.
Also, I'd like to review the new Run The Jewels album, but don't think many would be here for it...

I'm very here for this. Maybe going back as far as 2010.
Also, if anybody wants to review but is nervous or unsure about their review or how to review, I'd be up to peer edit if that makes you more comfortable.

I think going back to any year would be cool, there are many albums that could possibly attract reviewers and give a more varied palette of reviews.

The 32 reviews for 1989 does give me a bit of hope but I agree about reviews going down and the need for change. I'm not going to rely on the mods creating a whole new section of the site, though.
Your second idea is great and needs to be heavily considered if a section can be created.

Calvin Harris - Motion
Release Date: October 31, 2014
"And we could be together baby, as long as skies are blue, you act so innocent now, but you lied so soon, when I met you in the summer."
Calvin Harris shot to the mainstream when he penned and produced the mega-hit by Rihanna ‘We Found Love.’ He has been able to keep his super-stardom with hits from 18 Months such as ‘Feel So Close,’ ‘Sweet Nothing,’ and ‘I Need Your Love.’ He’s proven that he can garner a hit by singing on tracks himself or by bringing along another singer (usually female) into a track. He is even gaining pre-album hits with this album too.
EDM gets a rapport of all sounding the same and not being very creative. Unfortunately, Motion generally feeds into this conception. It is a totally safe album. Bringing in mega stars and up-and-coming musicians and pairing them to radio-friendly beats equates to hits. All About She (who really need to get more attention), Ellie Goulding, HAIM, and Gwen Stefani bring the best to their tracks, regardless of potentially lackluster production.
Even outside of these big stars and less formulaic tracks, they don’t produce the best quality. ‘Slow Acid’ has good potential to be similar to a robotic Daft Punk-lite track, but is just dragged down halfway through. The other instrumental tracks generally have drops that lead to absolutely nothing exciting at all. ‘Open Wide’ is an even more lame and almost disgusting version of ‘Drinking from the Bottle’ from Calvin’s previous album, which already wasn’t a great track.
The album isn’t all bad. ‘Summer’ is one of the biggest stand-out tracks and fits super well with its title. Calvin’s warm voice along with the breezy and almost roller-coaster-like production perfectly relates to a summer fling. Gwen Stefani-fronted ‘Together’ mixes EDM and confident, breezy pop together to make delicious production. Hurts song #2, ‘Ecstasy,’ shows unexplored potential in Calvin’s ability to turn down the volume on his songs. ‘Pray to God,’ like ‘Together,’ does a good job of genre mixing what HAIM is good at with Calvin’s EDM beats and drops.
Ultimately, Motion feels like a literal 2.0 version of his own previous album, 18 Months. Mostly girl vocalists, an Ellie Goulding track, a rapper doing their thing on a party song that focuses on alcohol, an all-too-similar formula running through the album, and probably even more archetypes if I looked into it further. Calvin’s first two albums weren’t perfection, but the tracks did do quite a good job of differentiating from each other and Calvin seems to suit funky tracks better than EDM. For all it's worth, the tracks are still fun to dance to.
5.0/10
★★★★★✩✩✩✩✩
Top Tracks: Love Now (feat. All About She), Summer, Pray to God (feat. HAIM), Together (feat. Gwen Stefani)

i'll second love me harder
i think throwback ideas are good to generate interest, even it does come at a slight detriment with bias. you, know, anniversaries can be celebrated by reviewing an album (5 years of TFM or whatever).
as long as it isn't overdone though. however the 32 reviews for 1989 is a good sign that so long as a single/album generates interest, this thread will too

I am so mad I didn't listen to Hozier's album sooner. What an amazing album
-----
Calvin Harris - Motion
Calvin's fourth full length release finds him in a new position .He's no longer "the extra on Rihanna's We Found Love" he's currently the biggest DJ in the world.Obviously expectations have been huge and everyone wondered whether he would stick to his mainstream EDm sound or go back to his more 80s inspired roots. The answer is evident on the first track.
Calvin decided to keep the style that made him big and continues to deliver one big explosive EDM - Pop song after another. Features include big names like Gwen Stefani or Ellie Goulding to more unknown artists like HIAM or the newcomer Tinashe. However the purely instrumental songs are what really shine on the album. " Slow Acid" is hypnotic and " Overdrive" beats the production on most of the other songs on the album. Ellie's and John Newman's voice give " Outside" and " Blame" the emotional edge most EDM songs lack and Big Sean brings some hip hop on " Open Wide". The album is constantly enjoyable but you can't quite shake the feeling you are listening to an inferior 18 Months.
Final Say: Calvin's album is insanely catchy and you can definitely leave it playing and it will carry an entire party from start to finish but overall some drops are not as good as the ones on 18 Months and some songs sound awfully similiar. But the good is news is that even when he falters a little he is still the best mainstream EDM producer out right now.
Best tracks: Slow Acid,Overdrive,Outside,Open Wide,Blame
6,9/10

it's more like a sign that as long as an artist has an obsessed stanbase on here, they'll rush in here to inflate the score with fabricated/biased reviews

32 reviews with a possible slight bias in general > 3 unbiased reviews for a low-buzz release. business is business.

How do we like the new template?
The top critic score is experimental because the Top Critics is simply a 7-person handpicked panel by me that could change. Feel free to nominate yourself or someone else for the panel by sending me a PM with a reason & sample review included.
