They still have money in the bank. Obviously still in hard time but they have enough.
They lay off are also cause of restruction plans for the company and cause they're planning to sent jobs over to China. Also you need to spend money if you wanna make money. However if they would have simply put a random commercial would indeed be useless but a commercial featuring a new Rihanna snippet that would gain lots of attention but considering 45S was recently release..
They'll probably focus on social media however like they did with HTTYD2 and use Nash Grier, Cameron Dallas and others since they own their management company (who also manage Tyler Oakley, Glozell, Miranda Sings, Connor Frata etc etc).
And obviously Rihanna social media power..
