But yeah, I thought the same thing as Rocket, re: a slow decline (you can even count E=MC as her Rainbow to extend the analogy) and then following the decline with a huge success. But knowing her, we won't get that next hit album for another like 5 years. All her original fans from the debut era will be dead so she'll def need to attract new fans with commercial songs. This album is about mid-tier for me, but I have to admit 90% of the songs are NOT radio-friendly (much like Charmy). But I have faith in the next album

The main problem in my eyes is promotion. Anytime Mariah has smashed in this century it's because there was a legitimate promotion schedule (TEOM, TMB, E=MC2's first week). No one knows she has an album out, she needs to be performing and interviewing everywhere . A single would help, too.

I think a bigger issue than promo is audience. She distanced herself from her older audience with E=MC2/her sexy appearance but she also doesn't come across as hip enough for the younger audience since she's older and her music lately has been rather mid-tempo and ballad-heavy. So she's not getting those sales from the older crowd (like Celine, Cher, etc.) or the younger crowds (like everyone else). At this point, it feels like only the Lambs are buying the album.

I agree, but I think it's because only the lambs know about the album.

There's been little to no TV promotion, no radio promotion, etc. If you're not looking to find Mariah Carey news, and you're not just strolling though record shops, you won't know there is an album.

I agree with you, she distanced herself from her older fans with all that sexy/girly image... i wish she could just stop tbh it was fun at first but now it's hurting her legacy Still I love her, and won't leave her just because her numbers are low these days...

yeah i definitely think audience was a issue, who does she appeal to? most young people don't use her because she's 'old' and most old people are going to be driven away because of her antics and how she presents herself in the media.
it doesn't help that radio isn't very supportive of older female artists and that she had no single or platform to promote.
the album should've come out when #beautiful was doing well.
but the fact that she just put it out without a single or major promo shows that she doesn't care about sales, which is refreshing.
