Yeah but from a business perspective you have to look at it in a ratio like gains:losses.
Every Pearl Jam single costs 1.29 for the label to buy. iTunes keeps a profit, probably about 20 cents? That means roughly every six downloads the label loses $1.
If a label frontloads and buys 145k of their acts singles (I think that's the criteria for the Top 10 on iTunes?) They would lose $24,166 in the process, and thats BEFORE you factor in royalties to writers and producers.
