Challenge #8 - Creativity: Make an EP - Judges Comments
Bloomers / Drake
collin - This is very Drake, but it almost makes it not enjoyable IMO. This is something he has done before. With an assignment like this, thinking outside the box is pertinent, no? I do like the variety of things you picked, though, so props. But the cohesiveness and overall coming-together-ness is a bit off.
Zune - I had a hard time understanding the aspects of your theme you selectied. Maybe the one sentence about how as the early morning starts to end, the harder Drake becomes and removes his emotions to focus on his work at hand. I could tell the songs fit what you were describing would happen in the EP, like how at the middle of the EP, Drake pretty much says "f hos, I should focus on my game". I just do not understand the direction in what you interpreted "the early morning" to be.
Cupid - You didn't include a cover song on the EP, which was one of the requirements, so I'll have to knock points off for that. I love the name of the EP and the artwork is cute. The last two songs fit the theme but I felt like it could have been better.
Citrus / Cher
collin - This is interesting, considering Cher isn't generally known for being political or controversial (at least not in the traditional sense). It seems like it tries to say a lot with a small amount of material, but I like where you took your ideas with the round.
Zune - Aside from the last track, I could easily connect most of your songs to the theme itself. The last track had some connections to potential americana thoughts, but within this EP, the song was indeed appropriate here. I think the EP cover was excellent as Cher is pretty critical in the EP of certain things America. Good job.
Random comments - Wow at BITUSA having those kinds of lyrics, who would have thought...I truly never listened to the lyrics in this song and wow..I can't believe a song got extremely popular with its critisicms it had against the american government lol. OMG at your third song being from the not.commercial album lol.
Cupid - For starters, I love the theme of this EP. You really took a creative route which I was hoping for. The artwork is beautiful. The cover song is perfect, it's so CHER, I can literally hear her singing it. Not only is this creative and styled beautifully but it's though provoking. For an EP, this kind of packs the same punch as an album.
Cristhian / Sade
collin - The EP had promise with the first two tracks but it kinda fell apart in my eyes. I don't really see a good solid universal theme that continues to work, kinda seems tossed together.
Zune - I think the Theme worked pretty well with the songs you selected. There is that sense of direction and searching I saw in the tracks you selected. I had an issue with the theme going from what I felt was general searching of one's life direction to figuring out the directions of one's love life.
I think the title was also a bit general and unrealistic. This track does not have a sense of a long journey ahead of itself. I felt the tracks had more of an aspiring notion more specifically. Pretty much the tracks and theme fit well together, but again the title didn't for me bring the EP together.
Cupid - For starters, you should never say "it's not the best I could do". You should be proud of your entry! I love the artwork and the title. The theme is great and I was really enjoying the tracks and thought they fit well. Until I got to the 3rd song, it does kind of fit but that's when it started to go downhill.
e437 / Kelly Clarkson
collin - I really like where you took this, a good theme that fits Kelly. I wish you could've included a song or two more and it would've been perfect, it just doesn't seem to come together as well as it could, but I do like all the facets of her artistry you included here.
Zune - I will say I felt anger throughout the tracks of the EP, some more then others really. However I just personally do not understand the direction this EP took. my issue started with the title. I do not think the title reflected the directions of anger that were seen in the EP. After that, idk if I was a fan of the cover either. Where Kelly looks composed and maybe a bit goth - esque, it truly doesn't reflect to me the anger Kelly has within this EP.
Cupid - I feel like you took the easy way out here. A Kelly EP about anger/break-ups, who would've thought?! This round was about creativity, this was your chance man! Having said that, I love the picture the cover comes from, although the effects weren't needed at all. The title is great and I love the fact it's a line from one of the tracks. NA and BTHE fit the theme well, but YCW doesn't really.. it's just not angry to me, it's more playful. The cover song is obvious but it fits I guess. I'm not wow'ed.
EuphorianSea / Christina Aguilera
collin - This is so easy to see Xtina doing, I really like that and I think you did some of the best work this round. Only problems with this: it's a bit short and the cover doesn't seem to be exactly reminiscent of the music included (although I do like it).
Zune - What an odd name for an EP who's theme is about Hope, but in reviewing my history books, I have a better understanding of the concept behind your EP title...sort of. I think in the concept of titling an EP Pandora's Box, one could get confused between whether in listening to this EP, evils will be released into the world (which is right where my head went to), or your comment that inside the album is songs of Hope. I think the title could have had something to the effect of "The remains of Pandora's Box". Plus the EP cover made it seem like evils were contained inside of the EP tracks.
In going with the title Pandora's Box and the theme being hope, i really like the tracks going with the concept of Pandora's box. In "I Am" I get a sense of temptation to hear more in the EP. This song would have been good outside of the EP, but Hope is contained in this song. Should have been a promo single that didn't come with the EP lol. Stronger Then Ever is good too, I see a sense of hope. Same can be said for True Colors and Cruz.
Outside of the EP title and cover, I think you did a good job fulfilling the theme of the EP in your tracks.
Cupid - I feel like Hope doesn't really fit in this EP, it seems more like Perseverance. I feel like you got 4 different songs that aren't really connected, and you kind of talked us into believing it. I guess in a way that is creative. I think maybe you were focused too much on the title Pandoras Box and you were kind of trying to cobble together a justification for it, rather than focusing on a cohesive selection of music. The artwork was amazing. I think maybe you just over-thought the whole story of the EP too much.
GetYourAssInMyBed / iamamiwhoami
collin - This is cute and I really liked your thoughts behind each song and the overall theme, nice. Seems a bit unrealistic to be released, but good nonetheless
Zune - Aside from the leading track on the EP, sever, I felt the dirtection of your EP theme and title easily. Sever I had some aspects of the theme, but it wasn't as solid as the other songs on the EP toward the theme. Other then that the cover was indeed cold and a bit bitter, fitting right with the theme. I think you did a good job.
Cupid - You could have shown me this EP and told me it was an official release and I would have believed you. That's how good it is. Artwork, title, theme, song choices etc. It's simple but it works.
iHype. / Mariah Carey
collin - Great work but next time don't type as much I have a headache omfg, let the iconicism speak for itself.
Zune - I definitely thought your EP had good aspects towards your theme. Each track has a sense of longjevity in love, which I liked to see. I liked the album cover except for the picture from the Bufferly era of Mariah. While she looks good and a sense of love is seen in her eyes of that particular photo, the other pictures to me have a sense of love lasting forever. In reviewing your explanation, I am very glad you toned down the chart statistics and went more in depth about the songs and what makes them special. Keep that up please.
Cupid - Everything about this was predictable. The theme, the artwork, the title, the cover song... It's the same problem I had with the Kelly entry, a Mariah EP about love... what's new?! Where is the creativity? And picking IWALY as the cover song...?! It's been done to death.
Penk / Janelle Monae
collin - This is kinda random and I don't really understand it or feel that it works as a cohesive flowing EP, but it's okay. The theme is also kinda... oh? Not feeling it 100%.
Zune - I was drawn into the cover when I was browsing the entries. Nice. I do not think the cover goes well with the theme, but no doubt the content itself within the EP fits well. Each track had the essence of letting ones worries go and just have fun. Sometimes it was more lyrically I felt it in the tracks you had, other times it was in the overall sound of the tracks. overall a good balance throughout your EP.
Cupid - This is all just kind of average for me. The artwork doesn't really match the theme at all. The title could be better. The song choices were okay, I'm just not feeling a creative spark from this, it seems rushed and thrown together.
Posh / Michael Buble
collin - I really like this, excellent work. I love the title and artwork and overall feeling of the work as a whole. Well done.
Zune - Great title to go with your theme. You know for your artist and the type of music Michael does in general, this theme can work perfectly with his work since the EP theme is flexible in its meaning. I will say I wish I felt a higher sense of rocky love in the songs you selected, but generally it worked well with the theme. The Cover to me made Michael look good, but I guess blank stares = rocky love? Eh, it was okay. Overall you did pretty good in my rankings
Cupid - I love the artwork. I love the title!! I love the theme. Love the cover song selection, inspired choice. Just love love love. He should make this.
Subomie / Kylie Minogue
collin - I really, really like this. I also think Kylie would kill it on SuperLove so I like that you included that.
Zune - In looking over your entry, the EP title and cover worked perfectly for the theme. I had more of my issues with the tracks itself. I think if you were going for a summer theme, I think you needed to select songs that had more then the essence of a summer song. Something like Chasing The Sun by Hilary Duff would have been a great summer song for this round since its obvious in its song theme around all things summer ... for example (not that it was a good one, but it stands out none the less as a song about summer themes). Into the blue is closer to the theme, but i didn't think the songs connected well with your theme.
Cupid - The title is great (Cheryl tea's). Artwork is flawless!! Theme is great, glad you didn't go for the obvious dancefloor fillers. However did you notice 3 of your songs contained the word "love". I feel like you could have maybe taken more of a risk and step out of the love inspired tracks. I could definitely see her on SuperLove though.
Truth Teller / Christina Aguilera
collin - I really like what you did with the theme, including songs from all over the board. It comes together quite nicely, but I would've liked for you to take this opportunity to do something not sex-related for Xtina considering that's kinda what put the knife in her career, y'know? She's had plenty-to-too-much sex music and finding a focus that isn't there would've been nice.
Zune - WOW WOW WOW! - Kylie Minogue. I think you did an extrodinary job on this EP. From the tracks you chose, to the cover, and even the album title. I really don't feel the need to say much because this for me was an awesome entry. Good job.
Cupid - The title is amazing, G.U.Y tea's! The artwork is a mess tbh. You could have just sent in the picture alone without any words on it and I would be drooling. I love the theme, I love the songs. Sexy Xtina is fabulous. Where is Sex For Breakfast?! Maybe it's a bit of a tempo change but it could have happily replaced Genie In A Bottle for me. Sadly have to knock off some points for not including a new cover song, Xtina's already covered that as you know.
