Everyone was pretty damn pissed that the doors opened nearly an hour and a half late, then we watched the stage being tested repeatedly, everything from the giant floating prism (which, it was pointed out loudly by a couple behind us, reminded them of 'Gaga's floating face thing' when it lit up) to the prism stage to the lighting rigs on the ceiling.
Icona Pop were booed at first, but as soon as they came on stage the boos turned into cheers and I honestly think "I Love It" was the song that got the crowd cheering and singing along more than anything in their set or Katy's set, apart from the 90s rave DanceCam section which got mums and dads singing along.
I was seated in block 4, at the front, and she spent a good chunk of the show with her back to us and to most of the 'Reflection' section. I watched the entire acoustic section from the screens, then she came back before flying over the section (who were covered with a giant white sheet - I'd have been mightily pissed not to see her flying above me!) to the B-stage during "Walking On Air." She did all of "It Takes Two" there, but did spin around slowly so she could see the entire arena, before most of "Teenage Dream," "California Gurls" and "Birthday" were performed there, again, with her back to the 'Reflection' zone and anyone seated more than half way down around the arena.
She is an enigmatic performer, despite her well-discussed vocal shortcomings, and there was clearly a LOT of money spent on this show, but for some reason the crowd just didn't connect in my opinion. Nearly everyone in my block, the block next to me either side and the blocks opposite, were seated for the entirety, even when she told everyone to get on their feet and even when they were on DanceCam before "This Is How We Do."
I can also honestly say that, having seen most female pop acts live - from Beyonce to Britney to Gaga to Madonna to Kylie to Selena Gomez to Jessie J to Dolly Parton to Girls Aloud to Kelly Clarkson to P!nk - Katy attracted the youngest audience of them all, rivalling only Selena Gomez. There were SO many 'tweens' and young teenagers everywhere, alongside parents, it was ridiculous (though not unexpected, I suppose - she's by far the most family-friendly, 'safe for kids' popstar in the mainstream) and it was no surprise loads left before "Firework" so they could be up for school, which was quite sad really.
