But a bunch of big contenders are always disqualified by WGA

Why?
----------------
Great to see both Trainwreck and Sicario in the original screenplay though. Both were great movies

Tom Hardy deserves a nomination for Best Actor. He slayed my life in Legend. So underrated.

I saw "Clouds of Sils Maria" recently. I love French cinema, I find it so passionate and intelligent. I really, really hope Kristen Stewart gets, at least, an Academy Award nomination; she deserves it. (I wish Juliette did too, but she's even more of a longshot).

I watched Ex Machina over the weekend I was blown away!! What an outstanding movie! All this time I thought a dumb sci fi movie and its way more tha that. It deserves some recognizion especially cuz it was an indie movie I read what the director said about it and he said he decided to make it independently so they wouldn't ask him to change anything or include dumb action scenes.

Under the Skin did it better the previous year, with a superior script and actress.

Ex Machina is my second favourite movie this year after Mad Max! It was brilliantly acted, and the story definitely didn't need all those stupid Hollywood spectacles to be awesome!
Alicia Vikander killed it.

If it wasn't for the award season I would have never checked it out! After I saw it had nominations I was like wtf wasnt that a stupid robot movie?? Then I checked the reviews and was surprised to see everyone praising and I had to check it out. Wow, what a movie she really was amazing tho.
Funny you mentioned Mad Max because just with EM I thought it was one of those dumb superheroes movies I remember everyone was watching it back in the summer so I never thought it was an actual good movie. I just checked reviews thanks to award season as well and I'm excited to watch it after reading all the praise.

I know that 'Mad Max' isn't for everybody with its non-stop action and violence. But there's just a tender humanity underneath all that high-octane. If there's a time when the Academy HAS to select a once-in-a-lifetime film, this is their chance now by making Mad Max: Fury Road THE best picture of the year, because it is soooo different from everything else. It's raucous, violent, and insane, but it's also a bold movie about strong men and women. The stunts and practical effects are outrageous, and the shots in the desert and marsh are just beautiful. That inferno-ish scene takes my breath away every time.
If they make some Oscar baity drama/comedy like 'The Big Short' or 'Spotlight' win, then it's a missed opportunity to reward a film that took guts and glory to make.

Hopefully KStew pulls a surprise with BSA. She's definitely become quite the hit with the critics. If it doesn't happen this year, I can see the nod coming in the next year or two. So deserved. She's actually an incredible actress.

Queen ScarJo's movie ended up 4th place on year-end critics' lists, and in terms of 1st (and 2nd) place votes showing Strong Passion was #2 behind Boyhood.

That Felicia movie ended up 6th place, and in terms of 1st/2nd place votes was...16th or 17th, I think? Meaning a bunch of critics liked it a lot but couldn't get to Loving it.

And @Superbitch, Under the Skin is also an exploration about a woman and the question of whether or not she has humanity, but there aren't a bunch of scenes of boring white guys having exposition-y conversations about technology. Or racist undertones with a silent Japanese sexbot

Really do watch Mad Max! Watch it on the biggest screen you can find and with the best audio possible. I'm sorry you missed it on theaters, it was such an experience. Nonetheless, I hope you love it. It's my favorite film this year. The message the movie has is quite something, and it has some of the best action scenes I've seen in my life.

I wish Cate Blanchett would snatch her third oscar.
As for ex machina, I feel Alicia was such a non-factor in the movie. She was good, but unremarkable and certainly not award-worthy.

Mmm, with the British Academy Awards giving noms to Short for those 4 + Director, while Spotlight missed Editing + Director, people are feeling the momentum's swung towards Big Short.
I would prefer Spotlight, partially because it's way more acclaimed (2nd place on year-end critics' lists vs. 17th), partially so Regina George is the main female in a BP winner. Also Big Short seems so...bro-y.

I wish Ryan Gosling was getting more recognition for The Big Short. I defense agree that it was an ensemble movie but he knocked it out of the park and was a highlight imo
