In my opinion, she did go for the obvious. This video was totally obvious Britney. I LOVE the scene where she's dancing and does the moves with her arms in the air, I wish there was more of that.
As for the scene with her hanging on to the pole...she looks as if she would fall on her face if she let go and she's just like...moving her legs...idk? It's just weird to me.
I just felt this had SO MUCH more potential...it's not about doing repetitive things or going for the obvious...it's about giving an amazing song the perfect video. How is that obvious?
What's so innovative about a girl Dancing in a black a white video with two back-up dancers? 
I just saw the remastered version made by a fansite and OMFG. 
And yes, there could've been more done to the video, but they kept it simple on purpose. That was Diane's description and obviously the reason they chose her as the director. Britney didn't have to prove anything with this video. She got a #1 hit with longevity.
