What a mess

Well this is true to an extent, given the state of music in 2014, the ceremony was always going to be doomed. The biggest musical acts of the year are newcomers (Iggy, Ari, Sam, etc) or people who don't really polarize the GP enough to want to tune in like Gaga did in 09-11ish. The people who could have boosted the awards so it wasn't literally one established act (Beyonce) carrying the awards on her own, all don't have current projects out/have other reasons why them performing wouldn't have been feasible (Rih, Gaga, etc).

I suspected that was the real reason why MTV was milking Beyonce's name for filth (I saw the ads everywhere). Trying to convince everyone it would be packed with starpower, when it was really a case of her being the only star there.

It served it's purpose. Enough people watched and her performance is even having an impact outside the US.

Ratings are actually an awesome way to measure star power, aside from singles, it's a more reliable way to see the interest of the GP in you. Albums are mostly consumed by fans. Beyonce was promoted as the main act, so it's a very reliable source of her relevance with the GP.

The ratings reflects the talents (or lack of) you guys support, the state of the music industry and the type of artists they choose to push. And that host was so bad!

The entire show was boring, uninspired and low budget for the most part except Beyonce. She was the best thing about the show.
Since BET did better this year I say next year bring more black entertainers on the show. We need more diversity again.

But you guys do too much. You only had two huge stars performing with two upcoming stars. Compared to other shows where you had five to six big stars, of course ratings would drop.

I do agree. But we can't say she is better or worse than anyone else unless we have similar circumstances.

For example, Gaga. When she was one of the main promoted acts, was there also very little other stars performing? No, there was not. So the two figures are incomparable.

It would be like saying that a party with 1 big DJ had 100 attendees and a party with 3 big DJs had 200 attendees. It doesn't mean the first DJ was less able to pull in numbers.
