I think that you can, but your environment might make you believe otherwise. A gay Muslim living in an Islamic community or a gay Christian living in a Christian community might feel like they can't possibly be devoted to their religion because of the things they hear on a daily basis.
In reality, being gay is a sin, that's true. But there are many other sins that people commit on a daily basis, and you don't see them getting judged for it. It's all a matter of perception. People shun homosexuality because it scares them, most likely due to how they were raised.
For me, the only things that I do which go against my religion is being gay and not praying all five prayers a day. Other than that, I do everything my religion asks of me. There are others who do so much worse, but they're perfectly devoted to their religion. So why can't I?
