This isn't a case of someone like Marina or Azealia. Unlike those two, Lorde already has a Top 3 hit in the US. She doesn't need the supporting act exposure to be successful since she already has a hit. She can grow her career off Royals alone.

Plus, Lorde being a supporting act would benefit Katy more than her, they just want Lorde to bring in ticket sales to ensure Katy's tour is successful. Lorde might as well not waste her time going around the world as a supporting act and focus on promoting herself with her own shows and performances.
