#10. Drake featuring Rihanna - "Take Care"
Beautiful. Drake's new best song, and one of Legend's strongest vocal performances ever. The lyrics are very organic and natural, and the sample is truly genius. Shame we never got a live performance, but he's a ***** so w/e.
One time been in love one time
You and all your girls in the club one time
All so convinced that you're following your heart
Cause your mind don't control what it does sometimes
We all have our nights, though, don't be so ashamed
I've had mine, you've had yours, we both know... we know
You hate being alone well you ain't the only one
You hate the fact that you bought the dream and they sold you one
You love your friends, but somebody should've told you some
To save you... instead they say:
Don't tell me, I don't care
If you hurt, I don't tell you
You don't care, if you're true

#9. Passion Pit - "Take a Walk"
Combines elements of the songwriting from their debut with a newer, more stripped-down type of instrumental. The lyrics are very effective and relevant today, plus it's really catchy.
Honey, it's your son, I think I borrowed just too much
We had taxes, we had bills, we had a lifestyle to front
And tonight I swear I'll come home and we'll make love like we're young
But tomorrow, you'll cook dinner for the neighbors and their kids
We can rip apart the socialists and all their damn taxes
You'll see I am no criminal, I'm down on both bad knees
I'm just too much a coward to admit when I'm in need
I took a walk

#8. Grimes - "Oblivion"
Look who's back.
If you look up the story behind the lyrics, there's actually a lot of substance to it and you'll realize how great of a job she does at turning pain into something joyous. But she ALSO does a great job of balancing the scary with the adorable, resulting in one of the most creative songs of the year.
I never walk about after dark
It’s my point of view
That someone could break your neck
Climbing up behind you
Always coming and you’d never have a clue
And now I'm left behind all the time
I will wait forever
Always looking straight
Thinking counting all the hours you wait
See you on a dark night

#7. M.I.A. - "Bad Girls"
Maya is a badddd azzzz mutha****a. Always, however with this song in particular. The statement itself should be applauded, but it also works as a brilliant pop song with some of her best and hardest hitting rapping in some time.
Also, best video of the year.
Yeah back it, back it
Yeah pull up to the bumper game
Yeah with a signal
Cover me, cause I'm changing lanes
Had a handle on it
My life, but I broke it
When I get to where I'm going, gonna have you saying it
Live fast, die young
Bad girls do it well

#6. Sleigh Bells - "Comeback Kid"
Honestly, just what I needed from them this year. Although I enjoyed Reign of Terror more than most, its sonic and lyrical heaviness as a whole can easily become overwhelming. CK, the lead single, serves as the perfect intermission in both of those respects. Fairly lightweight yet still rough enough to remind us why we love them, the airy vocals & quirky production take me back to 2010.
Don't turn around
Go get your gun ready
Everyday there's a way to do it just right
Don't wanna take it and just say it as I saw
You'd never know, just where you gotta go
...
Don't run away 'cause that's the deal with it
You gotta turn around, never let your guard down
I'll see you but I know it's gonna save you baby
You always run around breaking all the rules with it
I know you tried so hard, but you can't even win
You gotta try a little harder, you're the comeback kid

FLAWLESS list except for that Rihnestone gibberish.
It's so "indie-but-just-scraping-the-surface-I-can-only-keep-track-of-so-many-weirdoes." Like mine!

#5. Frank Ocean - "Pyramids"
I know I like to make fun of him, but honestly, wow. The first thing we heard from channel RAINBOW — before the note; before the hype built up to the almost unreal level it eventually reached — this track me away upon first listen and on occasion still does. Jaw-droppingly epic in composition, it stays utterly fascinating throughout its entire 10 minute duration. It is divided into two halves and tells a story which seamlessly blends the personal with the historical. Excellent in many ways.
Remove her, send the cheetahs to the tomb
Our war is over, our queen has met her doom
No more she lives no more serpent in her room
No more it has killed Cleopatra
Big sun coming strong through the motel blinds
Wake up to your girl for now, let's call her Cleopatra
I watch you fix your hair
Then put your panties on in the mirror, Cleopatra
Then your lipstick, Cleopatra
Then your six-inch heels, catch her
She's headed to the pyramid
She's working at the pyramid tonight
